© House Of Fame LLC/Michael Ochs Archives Producer Rick Hall, famous for his contribution to the Muscle Shoals sound, has died at 85.

Legendary record producer and Fame studio owner Rick Hall, the man regarded as the "Father of Muscle Shoals Music," died early Tuesday morning, according to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Reportedly in declining health in recent months, Hall was 85.

Hall's Grammy-winning production touched nearly every genre of popular music from country to R&B, and his Fame Studio and publishing company were a breeding ground for future legends in the worlds of songwriting and session work, as well as a recording home to some of the greatest musicians and recording artists of all time, including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Wilson Pickett and many more. To date, the studio and its publishing company have been responsible for an estimated 350 million record sales, with songs by everyone from the Beatles to George Strait.

Yes. I've watched it multiple times, something I don't do very often.

^^ Some of those photos are from Muscle Shoals Sound Studios started by the Swampers, not Rick Hall's Fame Studios.

Late 1961 Rick Hall produced Muscle Shoals’ first hit record on Arthur Alexander. The song, “You Better Move On”, was later covered by the Rolling Stones.

When A Man Loves a Woman

The song was initially recorded by Percy Sledge at Rick Hall's FAME Studios at Muscle Shoals, before being re-recorded at the nearby Norala Studios owned by Quin Ivy.[3] The sidemen for the recording included Spooner Oldham, Farfisa organ; Marlin Greene, guitar; Albert "Junior" Lowe, double bass and Roger Hawkins, drums. Andrew Wright and Calvin Lewis did not play on the record. Rick Hall arranged a distribution deal with Atlantic Records, but Jerry Wexler asked that the song be re-recorded because the horns were out of tune. According to musician David Hood, "They went back in the studio and changed the horns, got different horn players to play on it. But then the tapes got mixed up and Atlantic put out their original version. So that's the hit."[3]wiki

...According to a story in the TimesDaily in Florence, Hall died this morning at his home. Judy Hood, a board member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the wife of bassist David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka "the Swampers"), confirmed Hall's death.

"It's a very, very sad day for Muscle Shoals and music in general," Hood told the TimesDaily. She said Hall had been living in a nursing home in the Shoals, but returned home before Christmas.

Hall, a producer, music publisher, songwriter and author, was a key figure in creating the Muscle Shoals sound during the 1960s in north Alabama. He worked with artists such as Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman and Etta James, putting a small Alabama town on the map in the music world.

Hall was prominently featured in the 2013 "Muscle Shoals" documentary and wrote a book about his life and work, 2015's "The Man from Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame."

Has anyone read the book?

Yeeeeesssss! Last time I was up in that area was about 1988-89. Was dating a girl who worked for the TVA somewhere around Florence. At that time I had no idea all this music was up there.

It's about 7 hours north of me, but I'd love to take a weekend trip - after it stops snowing, lol.
