Besides being contemporaries (not necessarily musical rivals) during the 80's and 90's, I never really thought of comparing them on any level. I stopped following Whitney by the mid 1990's and was a casual Madonna listener who trailed off after Ray of Light.
Madonna's voice was a perfect vehicle for her material. She was not ever going to be confused for a powerhouse vocalist, but sang her material well. Likewise, Whitney as a singer had a tremendous voice that was unique to her material. I couldn't see Whitney necessarily doing Madonna tunes and feel pretty confident that some of Whitney's musical standards could not be reached vocally by Madonna.

I thought it was some kind of put on. In her prime Whitney was not to be messed with, by anyone. I once saw her at this stadium gig about '88 I think and the crispness with that power and raw soul was somewhat otherworldly. Sounded like an angel blowing the roof off. Never will forget it. Is she the GOAT of pop? Well that's another discussion altogether. | |

Whitney was an egomaniacal crackhead, Madonna is a doting mother of many adopted children and two of her own. Whitney Houston was a lovely ideal that sadly shattered into many sordid fragments over time. Madonna may have made some tragic moves over the years but Whitney Houston's overall life and career is tragic in retrospect. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2 |

. Smoking all that shit (not just crack) made her sound horrible during those final years. That GMA performance in Central Park was literally some late Elvis/Judy sweaty cracky embarrassment. . . I kinda think Madonna could have done Whitneys tunes better now than she did there. Madonna just belted out Borderline for now reason on Jimmy Kimmel and it was a decent live performance. Also in regards to "artistry" creatively and lyrically Madonna is superior. Whitney was a really good wedding singer that got in too deep, but she really set that bar high for wedding singers. There are a few Whitney songs I dig (One of those days, my love is your love, I'm your baby tonight) but a lot of it is torch song 80s prom stuff. She had a strong voice at a point in time that was undeniably stronger than Madonna's but realistically in terms of years, performances, and creative output Madonna's voice has obviously bested Whitney Houston. And then there's sales/charts etc. touring... its a fun catty argument comparing people from the 80s but realistically in 2017 Madonna is still here and can still sing and could probably sing wayyyyy better than Whitney if she were still alive taking care of her voice the way she was in the clip above. . Also re: Sex book fast forward 20 years later you can type your fantasies into a box on a screen and get it all for free. Madonna sold her sexy naked Instagram photos for 100 bucks years ago, big whoop. Whitney Houston recorded and approv d release of that cover of A Song For You, I find that more offensive.
