Could you give some examples of the "R&B whiners" you're talking about, please?

I don't know their names... I only know that I hate them when I hear them... and I can say that just about every single one that I hear sounds exactly like all the others.

Mistermaxx isn't going to like this, but R Kelly. He's one.

lol you know i almost mentioned him but didn't out of respect to maxxx.

R. Kelly whines? See, I disagree with that. Brian McKnight...now he whines, IMO. He's the only one I can think of, really. Wait...Sisqo, Ginuwhine, and Slim from 112...they whine. I just don't think one can lump every contemporary R&B singer together and say they all suck and sound the same. Maybe that isn't what's going on...maybe I should have read the whole thread.lol

R Kelly does whine at times but I wouldn't really call him a true whiner. I don't think Brain Mcknight whines at all. the cat from 112 is the worst.

So go start a fucking thread about white country singers breaking their voice and posing as actual cowboys. We'll all rip on them too. This is about the vocal stylings of a genre, specifically R&B, so let's all stay on topic.

None of the artists you mentioned are being criticized here. Nobody's debating R&B's importance to popular music. However, it all does sound the same now - whiny.

It's interesting how fitting a million notes into a few seconds is called a "run." That's what is sounds like - vocal diarrhea - the runs.

Sisqo in the chorus of "Wild Wild West." It must be really emotional, singing about the Wild Wild West. Well, painful to listen to, anyway.

I'm very dissapointed with the state of R&B music today, and it's not just because of all the "whining".I just feel that there's no more emotion, very little melody and a lack of truly great songs being produced today.Give me Stevie,Al Green and Donny Hathaway...the REAL soul music!!

Maxxx, I think it's very pretentious to assume that any critic on something that happens to created by blacks is an immediate racist attack. Maybe he problem is that you can't think past those bounderies and see critic is at it, just that.

And Nupwr; indeed I do not think most current r&B singers should be placed next to truely major talents as Nusrat fateh ali khan - one of my personal favorites by the way. A big portion of my cd-collection is made out of Pakistani, Indian, Arabian, north and west african music so I learned to appreciate differences in style; and seeing the richness of some of the older R&B-soul music, the current generation has a lot of cheap poseurs. Thak God for Angie stone, erykah badu...

i think it's that, and the fact that we tend to forget the OLD crap, unless we're reminded of it.

there's always been crap in every genre of popular music. the old stuff seems better, because with time, the crap gets weeded out, and the good stuff sticks around. no doubt, there's some music out there now that will be saved for the next generation to compare THEIR current music to and say "why can't it be as good as it was 10, 20 years ago?"

I wasn't a Keith Sweat fan, maybe liked a couple of songs including "Twisted." Actually I would laugh when I hear his songs. I actually imagine wolves howling and cats crying in the background.

Never fell for Ginuwine or even R.Kelly (heaven forbid) style of R&B.

I prefer the "neo-soul"(dreaded word) singers like Maxwell, India.Arie, Jill Scott, D'Angelo and the like. They don't apologize when they say that they are highly influenced by the soul singers of the 70's. If anything they help school the next generation as to what came before and hopefully influence them to seek that music out for themselves.

Thank the Lord for intha916, Mistermaxxx, and NuPwrSoul for schooling the board. It would be so easy to go off. If peeps would specifically list who they don't like and why or what they've heard that irked them so, maybe I can understand. If it's personal preference, that's one thing, but to discredit a genre because your ears aren't trained to adapt to a style of singing is something else. Grant it, originality may be lacking, but that can be said for all the genres like rock, not just R&B. I'd pick the music my parent's listened to when I was young child over most of what is being played on the radio today. At the same time, there are some gems in R&B as well who may not be vocally powerful but lyrically stronger and projects positive messages.

Going back to the beginning of this thread, I don't think it was ever meant to attack R&B as a whole, or attack any specific culture.

Many of the people posting on this thread seem to enjoy R&B. I think alot of todays R&B whiners are doing a discredit to an otherwise great form of music.
How would you feel if you saw that many Alternative Posers are doing a Disservice to a Great form of music? or Metal Acts were? or COuntry? terms we live by in a society are code words&one must think before they are suspected of wearing a "Hood" to issues at hand.

Dude, if you're gonna slam any white person that criticizes r&b, then YOU are racist.

If you're implying that I don't think theres crap Alternative and Rock artists causing the same problems to that form of music as well, simply because I'm white, then YOU are racist.

And if you can't tell the difference in singing and songwriting abilities between people like Stevie Wonder and Ginuwine, you're DEAF.

And if I ever did have any contempt toward any particular race, I would have no problem saying it on here. Fact is I enjoy and appreciate the contributions of people from all different backgrounds. I don't think a discussion about R&B should be limited to one group of people.

thats funny, I've never been to a "power lunch" or a Hollywood Boardroom. I don't have any say so over what gets played on MTV or your local radio stations either. And to the best of my knowledge I don't control the society either. Maybe I'm not white. Or maybe I am a white man that just doesn't fit the narrowminded stereotype you just imposed on me.

It is somewhat like a graceful ballet being performed by epileptic robits with rusty joints... it's rough, squeaky and it just isn't right, but it is a lot of fun to watch.
