Not knocking the Hall. But how did Sister Rosetta get in? Was it just from the viral videos? I mean she's been eligible since the first year in 85 but never received 1 nomination. PRINCE: Always and Forever

[quote] wow. Lame list. Only thing deserving there is Nina Simone. The Moody Blues were great and innovative (*for three albums) ...and very categorical. The Cars....not knocking them but geez...that was another fizzle in the pan. No Priest No Eurythmics Not even gonna bother watching unless someone interesting introduces Moody Blues or Nina (*and who would be deserving of THAT? ....only person that comes to mind is Esperanza Spalding.....but they'll probably get same old C major Alicia Keys) ♫"Trollin, Trolling! The power of Tumblr. She's mainly gospel, so I'm not surprised she hasn't been nominated before. Gospel & spirituals have not really gotten the attention as the foundation of rock & R&B/soul music. How much attention has gospel or Christian performers recieved in Rolling Stone or just in the mainstream media in general? Mahalia Jackson was inducted, probably because she has been the face of gospel for many people (like Muhammad Ali is for boxing) and she sort of crossed over to a mainstream audience, more so than Sister Rosetta. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Good for Bon Jovi. I love them. I think for some reason they never get the props they dererve. At most people mention them as their guilty pleasures
No guilt on my part. One of the greatest bands.

I don't know about that. I think if Sister Rosetta had been a male artist instead, I'm not sure she would have been nominated or inducted. Thomas Dorsey is considered the father of gospel and he's not in the hall. Sister Rosetta has the female vote, like they helped make the Wonder Woman movie a big hit, when it was thought that a female superhero wouldn't sell tickets. There was one movie theater that had a few all female audience showings of Wonder Woman. There's not that many female artists that have been inducted period in relation to male artists. It's about time that Rick James got nominated. I am bewildered with respect to why he has been unceremoniously snubbed for quite a long time.

Yeah overdue and they should have gotten in before GNR and NIRVANA but that is another story. People can say what they want, but its deserved, and not even from an album sales standpoint but also a touring force and the ability to still put asses in seats. Did they have a formula, YES of course after a certain point, but alot of artists in have fallen off in their own era's and jumped on trends etc...and they all got in first ballot. Jovi is the whipping boy for critics because he still can put out a record and it debuts at number one despite no airplay and still tour and sell out from USA to the other end of the world. Are they a political band NO are they here to change the world NO are they here to even change the landscape who knows, but they still are here and for the most part the records are good, a few bad moves in there but shit that is what a career is about, dont make me mention all the bad songs etc that others have had and got in . well said....and they do not need to be political or change the world in any way. They are a good old fashioned rock band. They just suffered from the decade and the era they debuted in. Critics mostly do not care for rock music post late 70s.
Same thing with Whitesnake (David Coverdale should defintely be in RRHOF). When their bluesy rock from mid 70s to early 80s were not bringing enough commercial success they got the big hair and threw some synths in the mix with their '87 album and got their biggest success.
80s fashion and sound does not take anything away from these bands in my opinion.
Makes me wonder what would happen if bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc made their debuts in the 80s?

Exactly even groups like CHICAGO and HEART had to wait eons because of their "hits" in the 80's and they were viewed as sell outs , hall and Oates same thing in a way, most succesful duo in history almost did not make it. If Barry Manilow hasn't been inducted, I don't see a group related to Lionel Richie getting in. Barry White is considered disco, and the hall has filled its quota for that (Donna Summer, ABBA, Madonna). Well fan bases need to put pressure if they want their artists on the ballot, this is how Heart, Chicago, Hall and Oates and Kiss all got on the ballot. So Rick James Kool and the Gang etc...their base fans need to speak up write in petition the hall and get working on it, because your eligible year comes and goes that is the ONLY way they will even remember who u are. Sister Tharpe isn't just gospel, she IS one of the pioneers of Rock N Roll. She should've been inducted in 86

Ohio Players, Rick James, Commodores, etc. haven't really even gotten any recognition from the BET Awards, so I don't see their fans pushing them for the Rock Hall. They didn't help Chic & Rufus to win, and they have both been nominated, Chic many times. Chic has the disco tag stuck on them, which probably doesn't help their chances. Lionel Richie did get a Lifetime Acheivement Award from BET Awards though. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Barry was disco to the mainstream. Really, the Bee Gees late 70s records & KC & The Sunshine Band was R&B, but they're both considered disco groups. Bee Gees were on a disco soundtrack. The Trammps & Kool & The Gang were on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack too. A lot of what was called disco was really R&B or funk like the Gamble & Huff stuff. Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry can be found on disco compilations and so is Black Betty by Ram Jam. Neither group is disco, more like rock n roll & southern rock. Same for Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart. Although it has disco in the title, Johnnie Taylor's Disco Lady isn't disco at all. But all of it is considered disco because it was marketed that way. That Love Unlimited Orchestra song Love's Theme is considered one of the 1st disco songs and that is Barry White related. Hell in the 90s I'd hear people on sitcoms say they're goin out to the disco. Disco Lady is obviously about a lady from a night club who's dancin lol. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Where the name came from doesn't really matter. "Heavy metal" doesn't have anything to do with music, but a genre is called that. "Rock n roll" was slang for sex. "Gospel" came from what the Bible is called. What is a "new wave", a "reggae", "doo wop" or a "dancehall"? "Hip hop" is what a rabbit & kangaroo does. The term "hit" came from the mafia, so did "with a bullet", but they're both terms Billboard magazine uses.
