Every artist "borrows" from the ones who went before. Prince did, so how can you be mad at Gambino for doing the same?

Redbone is a great track from a great album. I'll take that a million times over some of the other shite clogging up the pop charts right now!

Exactly, quality like this competing with hordes of 17 year old rappers singing about abusing drugs and fucking bitches and various skanky female singers, singing about have their pussies eaten. The charts are full o immoral crap, at least this approaches real music. It also helps that Gambino is 34 not 17 or 21.

on the other hand you enjoy Mayer Hawthorne, Tuxedo and Jamiroquai?! elaborate biggrin

I wouild argue that Jamiroquai takes their 70s influences (Roy Ayers,Chic, etc) and still manage to come up with their own sound and style smile Same with Mayer Hawthorne.Childish Gambino sounds like Macy Gray singing an old P-Funk song, lol.

that's debatable. do you find anything on Jamiroquai albums you haven't heard somewhere else before? even when they incorporate newer and more modern sounds those are not original new inventions

even more so with Mayer Hawthorne. I love his output to death, but basically everything is a carbon copy, a faksimile of songs that have been heard before. you could hide almost every song (at least from his two first albums) on some 60s or 70s album or playlist and no one would notice. and basically all Tuxedo songs would fit 100% on lets say an old Streetsounds collection from the 80ees.

can you say the same about Awaken Ma Love? I doubt that the songs on it would slip through unnoticed on some P-Funk sampler or playlist. so in short, I hear more of an own identy in Childish Gambino. having said that, for the time I still llike Mayer Hawthorne more based on his eintire cataloge and versatility biggrin

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I suppose because there's borrowing and there's direct lifts. Prince rarely directly lifted tracks and usually did something very different with the track when he did take something directly (think of how Stare pretty much lifts the bass intro from Hair by Graham Central Station but then goes in a different direction completely) . This is just a rewrite of the Bootsy track - same vibe and very similar arrangement and chord progressions. I'll tell you what, in 20 years we'll still be listening to Bootsy and this track will have disappeared. Same thing can be said for Have Some Love which is just a rewrite of Can You Get to That.

"He ain't doing nothing but reworking 'If You Want Me To Stay'!" -- fictional Sly Stone, circa 1987, listening to "If I Was Your Girlfriend" for the first time. lol

Check the charts - crap like Lil Pump, Kodak Blac, Migo, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, Rhianna, all these rap one hit wonders - commercial rap today is the cheapest made and poorest written music. It requires NO TALENT at all, they could train gibbons and gorillas to grunt to a drum machine beat and it would make more sense than half of these shit hoppers.

.

Gambino had real music, great soul singing, melody, guitar solos and cool as heck vocals.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Its nice that the celebrity kids can be so artistic and exploratory because if it fails they can just go back to daddy's second ranch and hide for a few months.

.

Prince, MJ, and Madonna in 2017 is Donald Glover, Jaden Smith, and Miley Cyrus. Kinda hilarious, didn't work well for Wilson Phillips, Lisa Marie Presley, David Cassidy's kids, etc. but hey they got that family money and those established connections.

Glover is going to play a young Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars movie, maybe that's what you heard.

The Fresh Prince is going to be in the live action Aladdin. He was around long before Gambino. Glover was first known by the public acting in the sitcom Community before being known as a rapper. That's where I first saw him. So I would consider him more like Don Johnson & Eddie Murphy, an actor who did music on the side.

Eddie Murphy again. razz Bill Cosby also released music records in the 1970s. Bill & Eddie had animated TV shows too. Fat Albert & The PJs. I don't think Gambino has done that yet.

Stop being jealous and sour grapes - it was written and released when Prince was dead. It is brilliant and has enough non Prince touches to be unique. I doubt Prince would sing a line like "Don't stay woke, niggas creepin, they gon find you, catch you sleeping, don't clsoe your eyes". Music is all about borrowing, listen to Awaken my love and it has Parliament, Funkadelic, Al Green, Marvin, Prince, Bootsy and all these other influences on it, but it also has a lot of original stuff, the smokin la la la opening bit is very modern rap mixed with G funk harmonies. Plus there is no way Prince would use that much autotune and sampling in his music or have a long haired Swede as his producer.

.

In redbone the line "My peanut butter chocolate cake with Kool Aid" is just genius but would be the quirky type shit Prince would sing about, it's Gambino's take on "Bushy haired Mulatto breakdown"

.

This song and the album work because it is perfect musical gumbo. I actually think "Baby Boy" has a bigger Prince sound, as its a plaintive ballad with lots of falsetto, backing vocal tracks and some plaintive soul screams taken to extremes like Prince did.

.

seriously stop dissing and start listening. If you don't have "Awaken my love" buy it now! So what he borrows a bit, but bear in mind this is a rapper who has made a near perfect funk and soul album and he is doing all this oter shit like rapping and writing TV shows. Plus let's face it, the masters are gone now, and we have to deal with the next best thing. Redbone is a pleasant surprise, I only discovered the dude 3 weeks ago and can't get enough of it cool.

[Edited 12/18/17 14:43pm]

I agree. I was not a fan and preferred him as an actor but he put out a solid album . I think people just enjoy saying we miss older music to the point where their head is too far up the past that they get used to the smell of their own bs and can't appreciate a gambino record thats perfectly fine

When I first heard it I said ok this is obviously based off some old Bootsy. What's that other one he's got on there that is Funkadelic Good To Earhole? The record is a throw back and he all but says he is paying homage in the interviews he does.
Every thing is influenced by what come before it. Prince was an original but if you can't see all the influences he embodied (Sly, JB, GC, Hendrix, etal)you ain't opened your mind to nothing at all.
Lots of artists allow themselves to be influenced by what came before. It's natural.
