The Pointer Sisters vs Sister Sledge Which sister group do you prefer...I love both...kinda hard to choose Pointers had more “hits” but Kathy Sledge had the better “voice” of all Sister Sledge favs: We Are Family, All American Girls, He’s The Greatest Dancer, My Guy, Keep Good Loving Pointer Sisters favs: Automatic, Slow Hand, Fire, He’s So Shy, Jump (For My Love), I’m So Excited

Both with Pointers coming out slightly above. SLIGHTLY. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Imma go with The Emotions. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I liked when the Pointers were doing the Andrews Sisters style act because I like the Andrews. The Pointers hands down! Sister Sledge, for the most part, were given really sub par material to work with. Kathy was the lead vocalist on the few hits they managed to have. Although she had a decent voice, it could not stand up to any of the Pointer ladies, especially June who had the most powerful, soulful voice of the group. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! I like both groups but I would have to choose The Pointer Sisters.

I have about 16 songs by Sister Sledge. Three of which are remixes. I have 46 songs by the Pointer Sisters. Four of which are remixes. I like them both, but if I had to choose, I'd choose the Pointers over the Sledges. Siste Sledge was pretty much R&B/Dance/Easy Listening, while the Pointer Sisters were R&B/Dance/Pop/Rock/Easy Listening and little more. I like their wider range of genre appeal. I'd go with the Pointer Sisters, even though sister sledge probably have the most well known song of both groups with "We Are Family" and possibly the 2nd most known song with "He's The Greatest Dancer." PRINCE: Always and Forever

The Pointers most definitely. They were more dynamic.

Sister Sledge's 1981 album All American Girls is very underrated.Produced by Narada Michael Walden,it is filled with excellent tracks.

Imma go with The Emotions. HELL YEAH!!!...i NEVER outgrew my love for Sheila and Wanda Hutchinson...The Emotions singing over all those Earth Wind & Fire tracks was amazing...Sister Sledge was basic and dull, and The Pointer Sisters looked and sounded like drag queens...when i first heard "Automatic", for days i thought it was a dude singing..

Seems like more say Pointer Sisters.... But regarding Sister Sledge, which version of “He’s Just A Runaway” do you prefer? The original Pop/Rock album version or the Reggae Tribute To Bob Marley version? https://youtu.be/tkncmqIWTng https://youtu.be/do5IYxjoJyA

The Pointer Sisters were all really talented singers. Bonnie left the group early to go solo. They all took turns singing lead like you would expect a group to do. Many people don't even know they won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance duo or group in 1974 for Fairytale (they are from Arkansas), Bonnie and Anita who wrote the song were up for Best Country Song. I loved Yes We Can, Steamed Heat and Chick On the Side...those are all early recordings. They have 7 top 10 singles..you mentioned 6 of them, along with Neutron Dance. 13 top 20s. Beside being one of the first black female artists to be played in heavy rotation on MTV. After Donna Summer (SWHFTM & Unconditional Love - 83), and Denience Williams (LHIFTB - 84), with Jump & I'm So Excited in 84.

I prefer the original pop/rock version. It's great.Such a shame that it didn't get much attention on pop or R&B stations.

In their prime the Pointers were a stronger vocal outfit. I have a soft spot for Bonnie. If you haven't heard the solo album she released a few years ago, check it out. I think it's only sold on www.thepointersisters.com. I like all the Sledges voices and appreciate their studio work but their live performances often paled next to the studio versions. As for "He's Just A Runaway", I like both versions but I've probably listened to the pop/rock album version more. The liner notes for one of their Rhino CDs said they got really strange looks from live audience when they performed the original rock version so they re-recorded it as a reggae-tinged song. I still don't know what the song has to do with Bob Marley. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They are from Arkansas....their father moved his ministry to Oakland Ca, Anita even went back to Arkansas for grade 5 (stayed with her Grandparents), grade 7 & grade 10. Anita is also an inductee of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame and still owns the land where her grandfather built his home.

Favorite Pointer Sisters song: "Automatic"...I think this is one of the catchiest, most fun songs of the 80s.
Favorite Sister Sledge song: "He's The Greatest Dancer"....a fun fact: Chic were going to keep this song for themselves.

I'm not trying to sound flippant but everywhere I see says they were born in Oakland.

Their audience wasn't used to hearing a rock/pop sound from them,so I think it took many of them by surprise but I never understood why they re-recorded it as a reggae song.Makes no sense, and it didn't really make people like the song more.

They very well could have been born in Oakland, I am not sure when their parents moved to California. I have heard (seen) them talk about being from Arkansas in interviews, their family (roots) is from Arkansas, so probably why they talk about it.

Ruth says in her autobiography that her parents moved from Arkansas to California in 1943 after they had their second son. It was there, in Oakland, that she and her three sisters were born. [Edited 12/18/17 9:48am]
