The dance style works better with his smoother vocal tracks rather than the gritty ones where the instrumentals and grit drives the song rather than the harmonies. It's like the style is trademarked from so much complex layers that anyone trying to remix it is tampering with a masterpiece

There's a similar but better mix on the "They Don't Care About Us" maxi, I believe. It starts with a piano and slowly builds into "and when the groove is dead and gone..." and builds from there. You might find it superior to the one above.

Its the same feelings I had with Prince on My Name Is Prince. Its that post NWA, Ice-T, Public Enemy, rap/hip-hop thing where a lot of the big mainstream artists wanted to pretend like they were still "street". It was fake and it sounded fake.

I think he had a heart problem if I'm not mistaken. It was sometime after 2011, I'm thinking not too long after he performed Jam with Latoya at some mj tribute event. I don't care to look up the details at this time, but you can if you wish

In all fairness, I think Prince was being ironic and tongue-in-cheek on that jam, and taking the piss out of an industry he was fed up with, keeping in mind this was his last single before he evolved into a symbol, and after working with Frank Dileo.

Michael on the other hand, had the biggest album deal in the world, was facing pressure I'm sure, and was doing everything in his power to expand his audiences and associate himself with big brand names/icons of that generation. It was a different industry from Thriller days. It's easy to say he was trying to stay relevant, but it wasn't much of an effort, depending on where in the world you lived when he was being promoted, though I'm sure he felt he had to work doubly hard with his evolving health issues

About the musical content, it holds elements of late 80's/early 90's hip hop, but unlike other new jack swing tracks, the focus was not the bass of the track, and the harmonies were unpredictable, and the production has a watermark that differentiated his interpretation/re-interpretation of new jack swing at the time.
