Fats Domino, who shaped the infancy of rock and roll with songs like Blueberry Hill, Ain’t That a Shame and I’m Walkin’, has died at 89, New Orleans' WWL-TV and the Associated Press report.

Mark Bone, chief investigator with the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, coroner’s office, told the AP that the rock pioneer died Tuesday.

WWL-TV anchor Eric Paulson received word from the family early Wednesday morning confirming his death. His daughter said he was surrounded by family and friends and died peacefully.

Rest in peace! Is it bad that I thought he passed away already??? i thought he passed a long time ago, no one talks about him much. A legend!

Another legend falls and takes his signature sound with him but his legacy and works will live on forever. RIP.

Biography:


Domino was born Antoine “Fats” Domino Jr. in New Orleans and helped infuse that city’s barreling rhythms into the rock & roll mix.

Domino had his first pop mainstream smash in 1955 with “Ain’t It a Shame”, though as was so often the case then a watered-down version by a white singer – in this case, Pat Boone, who changed the title to “Ain’t That a Shame” – got more radio play.

Domino would go on to score nearly 40 Top 40 singles, and was one of the first 10 honorees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He remained a lifelong New Orleans resident – or thereabouts – surviving Hurricane Katrina but losing most of his memorabilia, gold and platinum records and pianos in the 2005 disaster.

Also lost was his National Medal of Arts, presented by President Bill Clinton. President George W. Bush personally delivered its replacement.

One of the more familiar rock & roll presences on television, the portly, gregarious Domino, invariably seated at a piano, appeared frequently on the musical and variety shows of the Golden Age era – programs hosted by Steve Allen, Perry Como, Ed Sullivan and, of course, American Bandstand. Many years later, his song “Blueberry Hill” would become a frequent punchline when sung by Ron Howard’s Richie.

Domino also performed in two wildly influential rock movies of 1956: Shake, Rattle & Rock! and The Girl Can’t Help It, films that spread the news of rock & roll throughout the country and abroad.

The Beatles and countless other teens were entranced and called to arms, or at least called to the music.

R&B and rock n' roll pioneer Fats Domino died at the age of 89 on Wednesday (Oct. 25). Several hours after the news broke, the iconic Little Richard spoke to Billboard about Domino, who was one of the few artists who can claim to have started rocking before Richard.

"He's the greatest entertainer that I ever known," Richard said. "Black, white, red, brown or yellow, he's a just good guy and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to know him. I love him."

Many other artists have paid homage to Domino today as well, from LL Cool J to Darius Rucker to Harry Connick Jr., speaking to Domino's extensive, eclectic impact on generations of musicians.

New Orleans is empty today, knowing Fats isn't home. A lovely man who enjoyed his life, family and community. He was shy, and so talented.

All these guys already lived lomger than most of us probably will.

I used to LOVE "Blueberry Hill" when I was little - my mother had it on cassette. RIP

His wife, Rosemary Domino, died in 2008. Survivors, all of whom live in the New Orleans area, include two sons, Anatole and Antonio Domino; three daughters, Antoinette Smith, Anola Hartzog, Adonica Domino and Andrea Brimmer; numerous grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Monkies do not belong on that stage. He just kept under ground. Must have made money.

It's a bad shot, but I doubt they'd have set up a photoshoot without him.

He DID go through a very bloated period a few years ago. Possibly due to medication, who knows. His face went back to looking weathered again recently and I thought: "gee, they've fixed the problem"...

Age and water retention, possibly diabetes, liver...who knows. But he's looked better recently (2 years ago come to think of it)....
