Recordings they did, specifically, for this tribute. This tribute has been in the works for quite some time. Hence, those who have passed were alive when they recorded their songs, specifically for the tribute. These are not recordings that they may have done earlier in their careers just to do a Dan Fogelberg song because they wanted to record a Dan Fogelberg song and now since a tribute is being done, they're putting that old recording on the tribute. Hope that makes sense:)

Donna Summer sounds incredible on "Netherlands"

in the late 70s,I was really into alot of soft rock and lush ballads...so naturally,I loved Dan Fogelberg's 1979 hit "Longer" I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written

Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg put out an excellent album in the 70s called Twin Sons of Different Mothers. Still love it. Like this haunting cover of a Judy Collins song:

Yup! She does. Several positive reviews on her version. One reviewer referred to it as the undisputed highlight of the album. Miss her. We need unreleased material. At least, I do. LOL.

Listening to it now. I put Fogelberg up there with the very best of the greats. He's not more than a breath or two from Prince, IMO, as a musician, composer, arranger and producer. I'm trying to be optimistic but it's hard going in to think that anyone can do his songs anywhere near the level he did them.

I appreciate the thoughts and recognition this brings Fogelberg, though. He was incredible.

Hmmm, there are some good ones on here. My thoughts:

"Phoenix" - Garth Brooks. Basically Dan's track, sung by Garth. I *think* he used Fogelberg's vocals on the bridge? It's an OK cover, nothing special or different from the original

"Better Change" - Michael McDonald. Pass

"Same Old Lang Syne" - Train. Wow! I really never dug this song but Train's version is off the hook. They turned a mid-tempo ballad into an up-tempo toe-tapper and it REALLY works. Bravo!

"Netherlands" - Donna Summer. She sings great, but the brilliance of both the original and this cover is the instrumentation. What I mean to say is that the instrumentation and production on Summer's cover is the same as the original. I'm sure that wasn't easy to do, so I guess props for that

"As the Raven Flies" - Casey James. See "Phoenix" above. Maybe if I knew who Casey James is? Good guitar work on this cover, though

"Don't Lose Your Heart" - Dobie Gray. Meh. So-so song and so-so cover. I was hoping for much more

"Sutter's Mill" - Randy Owen. Weak vocals makes it sound like a run-of-the-mill Alabama song. All respect to Owen, but he can't really sing this kind of music

"Old Tennessee" - Denny Henson and Fool's Gold. Who and who? Here is a good time to make my feelings on these kinds of tributes known: If you can't make a song your own, don't try. Train did it; pretty much no one else so far has. If you're just gonna re-do the same song, stick to open mic nights or something

"Hard to Say" - Boz Scaggs. THIS is how you make a song your own. The Boz kept true to the original but sparsed up the arrangement to match the way he sings. Excellent song choice and wonderful performance

"There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" - Jimmy Buffett. Again, THIS is how you do it. Man, you can really tell the pros from the others, can't you? Special kudos for Buffett for not using steel drums on this cover. This is probably the first song Buffett has performed in 20 years that hasn't been ruined by steel drums, LOL. But all kidding aside, this is the best song on this set IMHO - and I really didn't expect the Buffett cover to be the best!

"Run for the Roses" - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Richie Furay. A pleasant cover and a real treat to listen to Richie Furay sing it. Great choice of musicians; in fact, this is one that you will listen to many times

"Part of the Plan" - The Eagles. Surprisingly (to me, anyway), Joe Walsh's voice works well on a Fogelberg cover. And this kind of up-tempo song is right in his wheelhouse. I'll admit I was tempted to write off a cover by these guys but it's really well done

"Longer" - Amy Grant and Vince Gill. I haven't heard it yet (still jamming to the end of "Part of the Plan") but I am prepared to need an insulin shot due to high sugar content. Let's see if I'm right, because here it comes! <Listening> I was right. Skip this one, talent grossly unused and not performed nearly as well as the original. Where's my insulin?!?

"Leader of the Band" - Zac Brown (live). I generally don't care for Zac Brown's music but he did an excellent job here. You can find him performing this on YouTube. It's worth the watch

I'll never be a fan of tributes but there are three excellent songs here, and a couple more worth the listen. Thanks for the streaming link, SoulAlive!
