My Girl, I Feel Good, Grapevine, Respect, etc When you think of songs from the 70's, I think: Staying Alive, Superstition, Yesterday,What's Going On, etc Are you talking about the Beatles' "Yesterday"? I don't think some of you get it. The songs I meantion above aren't my favorites of the period but rather songs that helped define the period. I love TRC but 20 years from now most people won't think TRC when they think of the 00's. I have a few I think might:
"Ms. Jackson" Outkast "Country Grammer" Nelly "Fallen" Alicia Keys "Stan" Emenim "In Da Club" 50 Cent "Hizzo" Jay-Z "Rock The Boat" Aaliyah You can look at it in different ways though. You're talking about hit singles (i.e. radio saturation) in that instance. Here's another example: when many people remember the year 1977, or the late 70s in general (sans disco) they think of the Sex Pistols first and only album they released as a group. They didn't have any hit singles that were as popular as the ones you named, yet that doesn't prevent many from remembering "God Save The Queen" or their album. The music that some people remember is what they personally connect to, regardless of its lack of impact on the radio. And radio by itself doesn't make something a classic. Tina Turner's "River Deep Mountain High" was never a big hit in the USA, but it's widely regarded as a classic in the USA - and deservedly so. There are those who consider Shuggie's Inspiration Information as an early 70s classic - yet it didn't dominate the airwaves either. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes. | |

I'll agree with Voodoo and Outcast, altho they'll never b classics. Most others mentioned just don't cut it, certainly not in the mainstream-classic kinda way. 'Fallen' will prolly survive. Eminems Marshall Matters (was this 2000?). Beck Sea Change. Robbie Williams Angels. Could come up with some more 'big hits', but classics??? Btw, there r 2 many popular genres these days, almost no one has cross over appeal. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

I agree with purpleone's definition: "a song is a 'classic' when YOU love it and at the same time you KNOW that everybody else loves it too. an example of a 'classic' is of course michael jackson's 'billie jean'. it's that song where you're almost certain that you speak for the rest of the world when you say: "now, that's a great song!" While I don't love all the songs I listed, enough other people did to help them be considered classics down the road. I think it would have helped if I had not used the term "classic" because people are getting to into their own favorites and that isn't what this thread is about. Let's look at it this way, what will "oldies" radio be playing in the year 2023 that's from the 00's? Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Not a big beatles fan either but I was thinking more or less about something from their last album in the early 70's. Their last album, Let It Be was released in 1970, that could be the one you're thinking about. Aside from the title track "Get Back" was also a popular song from it. I wouldn't feel bad about nominating
"Mama's Gun" "Who Is Jill Scott?" "Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape" "Sea Change" "In Between" "Quality" "Cee-Lo Green and his Perfect Imperfections" "simple things" My "jury" is still out on "Phrenology" & "Electric Circus" I also liked Amel Larrieux's "infinite possibilities," Res' debut LP, De La Soul's "AOI Pts. I and II" and remy shand's "way i feel." I haven't heard Bilal's joint, and D'Angelo and Maxwell have put out decent stuff in the interim, but nothing I would call classic. And don't get me started on Prince, who's last arguable "classic" was The Gold Experience." Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
