Are there any 00's classics so far?

When I think of songs from the 60's, I think:

My Girl, I Feel Good, Grapevine, Respect, etc

When you think of songs from the 70's, I think:

Staying Alive, Superstition, Yesterday,What's Going On, etc

When I think of songs from the 80's, I think:

1999, Like A Virgin, Sweet Dreams, Bille Jean, Kiss, etc

When I think of songs from the 90's, I think:

Get Off, No Ordinary Love, That's The Way Love Goes, etc

What do we have for the 00's thus far?

The mere fact that the Rainbow Children, Lauren Hill Unplugged and RKelly r the only ones named so far in this thread speaks 4 itself: no (or very little) classics so far. (note: i'm no fan of rap, but there have been quite some decent albums lately, so i'd say that's somewhat the 'genre' of the 00's so far).

a song is a 'classic' when YOU love it and at the same time you KNOW that everybody else loves it too. an example of a 'classic' is of course michael jackson's 'billie jean'. it's that song where you're almost certain that you speak for the rest of the world when you say: "now, that's a great song!" unfortunately, i haven't had that feeling in this decade yet. i've definitely heard some great music. they just don't live up to my understanding of the honorable title 'classic'.

i can, however, give you a list of songs from this decade that have moved me the most (not necessarily in this order):

- 'poetry' by roy hargrove, q-tip and erykah badu;
- 'sometimes' by bilal;
- 'penitentiary philosophy' by erykah badu;
- 'untitled' by d'angelo;
- 'rainbow children' by prince;
- 'ms. jackson' by outkast;
- 'jimi was a rock star' by common and erykah badu;
- 'chicken grease' by d'angelo.

these are the songs that hit me hard at first listen and still do everytime i hear them..
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain
i'm high, so high

Yep Saadiq LP is cool too, always been at least one hot LP per year since 2000 IMO. 2002 I found a little slow but 2003 exploded with Chocolate Factory. biggrin

You're right, US release was late January I think, it had just been doing bootleg rounds for so long things get blurred. I waited til Feb 14th here though and got it official day.

Harl, you may have Voodoo. neutral

Harlepolis said the full album. The marching band reminiscing interlude is tight yeah. Anyone know if it's true he had written the song back then in his school/college days?

God, it's so nice to hear Bilal, Lucy Pearl's "Dance Tonight" (LOVED the Love and Basketball soundtrack), D'Angelo (though he doesn't count) and of course Meshell being mentioned.

I don't think some of you get it. The songs I meantion above aren't my favorites of the period but rather songs that helped define the period. I love TRC but 20 years from now most people won't think TRC when they think of the 00's. I have a few I think might:

"Ms. Jackson" Outkast
"Country Grammer" Nelly
"Fallen" Alicia Keys
"Stan" Emenim
"In Da Club" 50 Cent
"Hizzo" Jay-Z
"Rock The Boat" Aaliyah

While I personally don't like 3 of the 7 songs I listed, all were monster hits by acts that are/were high profile in the 00's. When its all said and done, Nelly and Emenim have the best shot of being the Michael and Prince of the 00's talent not withstanding.
