yup! check out his live performance for france radio- really cool! another thing well worth the listen is the music and performance from Musafir; a group of rajasthan musicians and singers.
a good startingpoint are the cd's from "the rough guide" on Indian music, india pakistan music and their publication on bhangra. i don't know wether it's still on their site, but a litle while ago there was a docu about bhangra on bbc radio2 website. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

A thread I can relate to! I love this music as well!
I have some of the more modern hybridizations in my collection: Bally Sagoo, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh...I even have a couple of Indian movie soundtracks from the 90s. I have an album of Nusrat songs produced by Bally Sagoo that is very funky!

I've been waiting for bangra to catch on in the US since 1991 or so when I first found it. Even today, it hasn't gone much farther than the big cities, New York and San Francisco. It's very BIG in east Africa. I used to love Sangeeta in particular. Anyone know where I can buy this music online? Or at least in San Francisco? I'm really not into the Bally Sagoo stuff, but close.

Since we're on the subject of Lata and Indian soundtracks,
I advise you guys to pick Dil Se Re( it was one of the songs Lata sung for the sountrack that made me get the cassette and album and although not all songs are sung by her, it's very good~~), Taal( my father and brother's favorite)... and Lamhe! If you want to see Indian movie, see Lamhe ( my favorite) and most of the songs sung in the movie are from Lata and there's a segment in the movie when the characters are singing VERY OLD songs by Lata My favorite songs from Lamhe is 'Gudya Rani' which is sung to a child, Chudiyan Khanak( powerful opening), and Kabhi Main Kahoon( nice insturment sounds and cool opening!) Besides the movie won- Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Comedy Actor, please see it! As for Nusfrat Ali Khan, (my dad has so many of his cassesttes rainging from vloume2 to volume 25 and collabrations), try to find a good Indian music/movie store and see what they offer. For example, the store I always go to have 5 cds( either of a specific artist or a certain kind of music such as gazals or punjabi music)filled with some damn good work for only $25. In addition, there was a documentry on this folk singer on network Wnye, channel 25( in NY). [This message was edited Fri Apr 18 8:52:13 PDT 2003 by careydevi]

I love Bhangra (For some reason I thought it was Phangra) I went to a Hindu wedding back in 98 and I fell in love with it. It was remixed, so it had hip-hop beats in the back. I had to go get some of that

Now this brings back memories! I dated an Indian woman for four years, and Lamhe is probably the first Indian film we saw together. I have the soundtracks to Bombay and 1942 A Love Story, and the latter project features one song sung by Lata Mangeshkar ("Kuchh Na Kaho") -- truly a beautiful voice.

But so far, that song is my fave.

I just got "Asoka" fro Netflix.
Black Album strings on SuperfunkyCalifragiSexi reminds me of the cold melodramatic strings that permeate Indian film soundtracks... My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
