Songs you loved back in the day, but can't stand now

I used to really like that Tony, Toni Tone song - It sure feels good and looked it up on Youtube, back in 1990/91 this was my jam - but now I watched it and thought it was crap.

.

.

The sound and beat is generic and some terrible Time style dancing. What pissed me off the most was the blatant sexism, there are girls barely sounding like porno bots, with them saying "Uh uh baby" and the chorus "The riddim feels good, baby lets take it away" sounds like a Pizza Hutt ad from 1988 rather than a song about sex.

.

That horrible "art mess" and ziggy style of the late 80s and early 90s is tacky too. Plus are they just faking it on those guitars. Basicallyt 3 oversexed man gyrating and singing about fucking while scantily clad girls make orgasm noises. Plus they had a Tony M type rapper and DJ in it too.

.

Do you guys have any other songs you loved as a kid, but really can't stand now. 90% of this Back in the day I save as a like, but this song was saved for like 1 listen. Funny as I think Rafael Saddique or whatever his name came out as gay or was that some other dude with glasses and an Islamic name.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Another one - I mean what the hell was I thinking- maybe itw as because I was 14/15 and found songs about sex funny or something. I had all these guys singles and the CMB album.

.

.

I remember it was a primary colour nightmare with hype williams, vibessa style writing, really these guys were watered down Vanilla Ice meets some pap pop rapper of the 1989 era. The song is average but the same degrading sexist piffle about non stop fucking.

.

I like it even less now we know the lead singer is a bloated redneck who beats the shit out of his wife and this was all an act. Is it me or was the very early 90s just full of rubbish music, it presaged the beginning of rap and shit hop in all music and this acapella multi racial thing (Jew, Mexican, Black and so called White boy who was probably also Jewish) that was so popular in the 1990s. It also led to the most godawful group of the 90s - All for one (Apparently the white guys did not sing).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Aw, I still love "Fascination." The Thompson Twins never did it for me, though.

I can think of lots of stuff I liked as a kid that I don't like now. But after further development of my tastes, there's not much I've reversed myself on since then.

Damn you dragged Tony Toni Tone, I still dig "Feels Good" it was one of the more iconic New Jack tunes of my youth. I can't even with "If I Had No Loot" still to this day that shoe fits and I'm gonna wear it good.

.

I would like to submit world renowned, golden child Adele to that list. I was in the bank and her cover of The Cure's Love Song came on and it was like listening to water torture. I tried to revisit Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill a while back and literally skipped every song like there was a better one in there somewhere but I just couldn't find it (its cuz there isnt).

Right isn't Feels Good just a song about being happy?

Fast forward to 2017 Raphael Saadiq is an accomplished entertainer with some serious tunes under his belt. I love his work with Lucy Pearl, his solo stuff, even his productions for artists like D'Angelo (I love Lady and their duet Be Here, a dude duet but also a beautiful tune) Kelis, Joss Stone, and Solange.

^Of course it is about sex. The ladies, the dance moves, what else could it be about? Bad dance moves, bad music, so I'm sure the sex must have been pretty bad too, because everything is bad about these guys to the very name they used... But yeah, it's about sex.

Just relistened it is a little cheesy and yeah probably about sex but its a fun groove, plus that break wasn't as prevalent at that time as it is now. Hell some modern EDM tracks use that same break.

The Ooh Ooh baby sample is from Indeep's funky track When Boys Talk

Most of the ones I loved at some point I still at least like. But my first two favorite musical acts were the Village People and KISS, and for my twocents most of their work didn't age well.

Scantily clad women going "Uh uh baby" like in orgasm and having 8 inches of mambazo inside of them, and the guy singing about riddim and making her his wife on the account of one good root - what the fuck else could it be about other than sex lol lol lol

.

I actually like "If I had no loot better" and kind of respect Rafael after reading about him. I got him confused with Rashaan Patterson who had a song called "Baby stop by" or something, my memories of 90s R&B just are not what they used to be. All I know was there was a lot of explicit sex jams back then, but at least these guys sang them (Groups like After 7, High Five, Silk, Shai and Rift and singers like Keith Sweat and Ralph Trsevant).

.

Take the song Freak me by Silk, okay the lyrics are sexual as hell, but fuck could these cats sing, the dude going "Tonight babbyyyyy, I wann get FRREEAKKY with you, you youyou, all of you, let me freak you" - no one sings like that no more.

"Wannabe" by the Spice Girls.

I love the album and it was a great opener to the group but twenty years later I still skip right to Say You Will Be There.

Its so cheesy and the fake ass rap just doesnt do it for me anymore. I used to think it was so cool and I know all the words but I hear it now and kind of cringe. I think to myself...they couldnt play ANY of their other better singles?

Yes I agree, but the Spicegirls were new at the time, they bought female empowerment to a new generation of British girls and then did that great trans Atlantic Crossover. I don't like their other songs, but do love 2 Become 1, there is some really good singing there and it is a beautiful ballad.

.

Plus the spices opened the whol girl group thing and they did introduce the characters for each member, most of them went on to have solo careers too. Mel B (The Black one) and Mel C were the best singers though, Victoria thought she was posh and Ginger tried too hard to be a gay icon.

Thanks for pointing that out.... I'd never heard of this song before, but man, it sounds just like "Last Night A Dj Saved My Life." lol

Hey, I don't know if you're aware but the main female singer, Rejane Magloire, used to front Technotronic after Ya Kid K left and in 2005, she released an album called "Forbidden Opera," which is like a Hip-Hop meets opera type of project, it's really out there.

Yes, it was Rahsaan who came out as gay, that was who you were thinking of.

As for myself, I couldn't really think of an answer to your question, but then I realised that I recently tried to listen to Vanilla Ice's "To The Extreme" album on Apple Music and the songs were laughably bad.

Rahsaan Patterson is a great soul artist.
I don't feel like his music even sounds like it has a time stamp.
His catalogue of albums is quite amazing.

This thread disbelief

We were all making the George Michael/Kenny G comparisons 26 years ago
“Feels Good” is still and will always be a jam
“Bohemian Rhapsody” and “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” are classics
“Lies” may be a little slight, but anyone who doesn’t like “Hold Me Now” can’t be trusted lol
Everybody knew Rahsaan “The Kid” Patterson was gay way back on Kids Inc.

The joke is typically that GM is compared to Mark Calderon, the Latino dude with the long flowing locks.
.
I think it originated on Beavis & Butt-Head, where they were watching "I Wanna Sex U Up" and Butt-Head commented

The hair and the 5 o'clock shadow...yes, that’s the GM lookalike. Both comparisons were so immediately obvious that I don’t think Beavis & BH can take credit.

The Kenny G lookalike married American Idol's Tamyra Gray, so he’s the big winner in all this.

That was the best thing about them. They not only crossed barriers (everyone loved them or hated them), they were different than any other female group at the time or before them...even after. They were disco, pop, r&b and tons of fun. 2 Become 1 is a great ballad as well as "Mama". Anyone could sing 2 Become 1 and would be just as beautiful. Def underrated.

Maybe you just heard a song too much... I'll tell you a little secret... I haven't listened to the Purple Rain album even once for... I don't know how long... Maybe this entire century! Simply because I've heard it too often. It will always be in my top ten of best albums ever, but, strangely enough, that's exactly why I don't want to listen to it anymore.
Also, there can be music that you hear at a certain time in your life that you relate to and then you move on and experience other things and then there's other music that relates to that.

88 to 91 was one of my least favorite eras of pop music. It was all tacky ass synths, loud drums, Cross Colors and Doc Martins. Millie Vanilli, C & C Music Factory, Paula Abdul, Rico Suave, Vanilla Ice, Was(Not Was), Debbie Gibson, Fine Young Cannibals, New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark, Tone Loc, Young MC, and Richard Marx. It was a calvacade of over processed, candified crap. I would say that era was as bad as the music scene in recent years. A few Prince tracks and underground hip hop was the only saving grace. I have no interest in revisiting that era. barf
