Music biographies/books which should be written

There's a multitude of books about Elvis, The Beatles, Bob,MJ,The Stones,Tupac etc so what music biography/books would you like to see. For me

Sananda/TTD
The Escorts (R&B/Soul group)
Milli Vanilli
A book about the unsung soul singers and bands
Donny Hathaway
Minnie Riperton
Linda Jones

Johnnie Taylor
Wham!
Tyrone Davis
The Time (a photo/story book by the members like Beatles Anthology & Genesis Chapter & Verse)
Billy Ocean
Johnny Mathis
New Edition (in one of the interviews BBD did to promote the NE biopic, Ricky said NE might be doing a book to talk about stuff not in the movie)
Cameo
The Whispers
Isley Brothers
Tears For Fears
History of female rappers (particularly early ones like Lady B, Mercedes Ladies, & the Winley sisters)

a book about R&B and/or gospel related musicals & concert movies (ig Wattstax, Save The Children, Amazing Grace, Beat Street, Green Pastures, etc. Maybe in an encyclopedia style)

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Milli Vanilli? You've GOT to be kidding! Why not Boney M? Or better yet, a biography of Frank Farian, subtitled "How to Make Stars Out of People Who Can't Sing".
Seriously, the story of how TTD became Sananda Maitreya is of course interesting, but because he is out of the mainstream now, there is no market for a book about him. The same goes for the unsung soul singers: the "unsung" is exactly the problem.

There's a Milli Vanilli biopic in the works.

A New Jack Swing book would be interesting. Teddy Riley gets the credit, but there were other producers like Full Force, LA & Babyface, Kyle West & Al B. Sure! behind the scenes. I'd also like to see a book about Latin Freestyle

Or how about this:
"From Augusta to Paisley Park: My Time With James Brown and Prince" by Alan Leeds.

I´m a big fan of Full Force, have all their records, but I wouldn´t really consider them important contributors to the New Jack Swing phenomenon.

What tracks do you think of ? Ain´t My Type of Hype?

Sure, that was definitely NJS inspired but did they write more songs like that?

Just curious....not doubting your expertise here.

Now THAT would be a great read. I´d love to see D´Angelo included though.

I´m surprised that we haven´t seen a book by Mr. Leeds yet.

WTF is up with these tiny , tiny letters?

I was watching the interview with Fab of Milli and found the story rather intriguing. Of course Bonney M and Frank Farian could be incorporated. The point I'm making are books about singers and groups that there's not a lot of material about and one about Milli Vanilli for example would be interesting because outside of the Behind the Music and Fabs interview not much is known about them. Same with Sananda who most in the mainstream aren't aware of his new name etc. As for the unsung singers it would be something northern soul/soul music connoisseurs would be interested in. Think niche books for niche audiences and that's what I was thinking. Maybe mini bios ala the Unsung series for groups too. A few more books I was thinking would be interesting

DeBarge family
TLC
Mariah (last book was like in the late 90s)
The OJays and the Leverts

New Edition would be good but I think the BET bio covered it all or at least most of their story.

A book on the year 1984 would make my day. Too much happened in music that year for there not to be a documented compilation for it.

Books on other record labels (i.e. RCA, MCA, Arista, Geffen, etc.) would be kinda neat too. Those would be a great for people who want to read and learn more of the business side in the music industry but also those who want to go behind the scenes of a record label and hear the juicy tales of artists and their albums.

I was actually going to say milli vanilli cause I enjoyed fabs interview , and while he's still here to tell the real story, that would make for a good deal

Also we hear about disco and the second British Invasion and early hip hop often; that talking about new jack swing and even freestyle/drum and bass origins and the rise to mainstream would be great to read about

Would love to see what Weeknd and Bruno mars would write about in their autobiographies in relation to life experiences and early musical influences.

Would be interesting at some point in time to see mj and Madonnas kids write about their accounts of having superstar parents and what led to pursuing their own ventures when they actually have something of their own to show for it

the PBS TV shows SOUL! (Ellis Haizlip) & Black Omnibus (James Earl Jones). There's 2 or 3 books about Austin City Limits, so I's like to see these get a book too. They don't have to be separate, can be the same book since they were on around the same time.

.

Menudo would be cool. I wonder what was the reason for kicking out the members at 16.

Recheck the cynicism. There is a lot going on there. First, two guys are propped up with promises of money to mime a pop act. Second, there were voices behind that charade. A really good set of voices, in fact. On their own, they were great singers. Rob & Fab were basically the fall guys for the Farian who put that whole thing together. It eventually drove one to take his own life. There is a huge story there. How did these models end up fronting a band that was fake as hell? And no one caught it for a really long time.

That would make for a great 300 pages.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

There's already a book about that. I read it years ago.

Nice. Is it more about James tho? Or really about Billy Ward and the Dominoes, Hank Ballard, Joe Tex, Five Royales, Little Willie John and the King Story.

It's not just about James. It talks about the R&B, jazz, gospel, & country acts on the label. It mentions Syd Nathan being cheap and also songwriter/producer Henry Glover. It talks about many of King's records being poor quality because they would melt down unsold records (with the paper labels still on them) to make new ones.

Yeah... that FULL ASS...needs some full coverage.

especially these days.

I hope she gets some help. She's not ordinarily that weight. For Aretha it was gradual and something else. BUT for Mariah... living like that could be seriously dangerous.

I'm not a fan of post 90's Mariah, but I hope she truly works on her discipline, happiness, and health.

Think she is thick in all the right places actually, but you can tell she is unhappy or something. At least from her show, I can tell she seems like she is emotianlly disconnected outside of her children. Mid life crisis or something?

Just looked up a CURRENT photo.... looks like she's lost a bit of the weight she'd had when she was touring here in LA.... a BIT of the weight... maybe lipo.

She was getting carried around all show, and huffing and puffing, and hardly even walking

Smh. She looks like she think she is 'too good' to go to the gym. Whereas even Janet who is older than Mariah and been in the industry much longer constantly prepares herself for a rigorous tour with a good diet and strict work out. Mariah can learn from her peers.

Stiv Bators. He was in two great bands in The Dead Boys and The Lords of the New Church and released one great solo album, Disconnected, during his lifetime. These days he seems to be completely forgotten.

I saw a Blondie book in the 1990s, but it's probably out of print by now. Maybe your local library might have it. There'a also some books about Debbie Harry.

I forgot to mention in my original post a book about Roger Troutman and Zapp would be really good. Although the Unsung episode might have covered the main points. I agree about a Mariah book. I think her TV show was very smoke and mirrors and you still didn't get to see the real Mariah. I imagine say a biographer who could get behind the scenes so to speak could write a very interesting book.
