Comic books have come a long way since their rise in the early 20th century, but they’ve mostly remained bound to pen and paper. A new comic, “Masters of the Sun: The Zombie Chronicles,” from Black Eyed Peas musician Will.i.am is looking to change that by having an additional augmented reality component readers can see with their phones.

Unlike other augmented reality additions to physical materials, it’s not just brief flashes of animation. When the reader hold their phone to the page, they hear a score composed by Hans Zimmer, narration from Stan Lee, and characters’ voices portrayed by actors including Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Rosario Dawson and Snoop Dog.

The comic has been out since August 2017, but the app adds additional material to what’s on the page. Will.i.am has made waves in the technology world as well as the musical one. He was appointed Director of Creative Innovation by Intel, and founded the tech startup i.am+, which just raised $117 million for a voice assistant for customer service. He worked with mixed-reality company Trigger Global to create the app, having caught on to the AR trend back when he was working with Intel.

The AR is meant to add to the experience of the comic, but not supplant it, as Will.i.am told Business Insider, “We did the book first for the traditionalists, and will expand upon it with augmented reality and then virtual reality.”

The app is available for $1.99 for both iOS and Android. In order to the app to work, you will also need a physical copy of the graphic novel.
