R&B 1988-89 Memories

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who made me a mixtape back in the day and some of the songs include:

Joy and Pain – Rob Base 1988
On Our Own – Bobby Brown 1989
Batdance – Prince 1989
Miss You Much – Janet Jackson 1989
Put Your Mouth On Me – Eddie Murphy 1989
Spy in the House of Love – Was (Not Was) 1988
Good Life – Inner City 1988
Birthday Suit – Johnny Kemp 1989
Every Little Step – Bobby Brown 1988

It also has one mystery song I think you'll enjoy. The singer is singing about going to a club with his friends. The problem is I can't figure out who sings it and my friend can't recall either. I'd sure appreciate it if anyone could identify the song and singer.

That period of the late 1980s was a great time for R&B, New Jack Swing, and dance pop. Do you agree?

The mystery song can be heard here:

https://www.youtube.com/w...&t=10s

Take care everyone.

Is the song your looking for "Just got paid' by Johnny Kemp. It is from 1988 and sounds Bobby Brownish.

"Radio rocking a monster jam", "Just got paid, its Friday night, party jumping, bass is right, everybody pumpin "

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Hadn't heard that track in years LOL. Album is really poor in general, but that track and "Searchin' for a good time" (also on youtube), are pretty decent. Reminds me of Billy Ocean.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Thank you all for sharing your memories. I really appreciate it.

My DJ friend who made the mixtape used to let me sit by him while he played his music at bars or parties.

Honestly, back then I didn't really know about industry labels like R&B and New Jack Swing and Urban and Hip House and Freestyle. I just knew I liked the music my friend played and later I learned more about the different genres.

So, my mystery song turned out to be Marcus Lewis - The Club (Original 1988 Club Mix).

Thanks again to the person who identified the song.

You are a great group of people. By the way, I am definitely a Prince fan and he was definitely part of my 1980s music experience.

Thanks again, everyone.

Take care.

CoolMF

I've been enjoying the responses in this thread. I'm not an expert on release dates so I'm not sure that all of the songs listed are '88-89ers but the lists have brought back some good memories of forgotten jams (like "Little Jackie" by Lisa Lisa).

Great era (in terms of the music) to be in high school.

A few songs that I didn't see others mention:

Roni - Bobby Brown

So Emotional - Whitney Houston

Mercedes Boy - Pebbles (I don't know if it counts as R&B or just pop...it's a catchy song.)

Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above
