The Wham! Family Thread

I know that everyone talks about George Michael (before and after he passed), but he wasn't the only one to spinoff from Wham!, you know. He gave others in the band a chance to shine, sure they weren't as successful as George was, but they still left their mark

Interesting thread--I really don't know anything about other band members.

I just listened to it again last night on my Echo. It's a good blueprint for a pop album. "Credit Card Baby" is a favorite.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Wham! Are amazing. They made some seriously funky, catchy pop music.

Just listened to Make It Big for the first time. Take away the daisy dukes and you have some seriously great pop. Everything She Wants is genius. Great haircuts too cool

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Deon joined the band Brainstorm on their 2nd album (1978) as a bassist. He's doing lead vocals on this track

Pepsi and Shirlie were legit popstars for a brief period in UK and Ireland and prolly Europe. Deon Estus is a direct link from George Michael to Motown through his tutoring by James Jamerson, I always wondered if this was part of the reason George chose him (that and he's a fantastic bassist of course).

Fantastic is well underrated, very much a New Pop album without any of the punk hangover baggage. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to the listener but there's a surprising amount going on in it. I find I have a hell of a lot more to say about it than Make it Big anyway.

It really is.

One of the reasons I consider MIB such a great album is its subject matter. That Wham! brand candy was wrapped in a bright, pastel-colored packaged that shone like the sun. When you make it past the gaudy packaging, take the wrapper off and actually try the candy, it's not the syrupy sweet confection you were led to believe...

You got songs about fidelity and trust as well as money-based and "friends with benefits" type relationships that go right over your head because of their upbeat, Motown-inspired production.

He wasn't there for their first couple of singles but he definitely added a lot to their sound when he joined.

He was there on the first album already, mainly Club Tropicana is great stuff. The very first singles before the album he wasn't, as you wrote.

If you watch the Wham! Rap video, Deon is there at the "jet black guy" part. The "white cool cat" is Andrew's brother Paul Ridgeley. Paul was in their pre-Wham! ska band called The Executive. The 4th member of The Executive is David Mortimer, who does background vocals on Wham! Rap.

THE EXECUTIVE: Georgios Panayiotou, David Mortimer, Andrew Ridgeley & Andrew Leaver

Same guy, he used the name Mortimer as a stage name. If you read the Fantastic album credits it says Mortimer, not Austin.

The Wham! rap video was made in 1983 when the song was re released. I think his first appearance was for the Young Guns top of the pops appearance, although he wasn't on the recording of it.
