i like it better redone as "Redbone" by Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover... Bootsy's cartoonish approach to vocals and lyricism, never sounded right on slow songs, to me...and i love Bootsy Collins music...

.

right on, & on point SoulAlive.

my 9-year old daughter even likes this song. the main refrain is catchy, repetitive, & easy to pick up.

(I absolutely continue to expose my children to REAL MUSIC.. for as long as I have their ears..!)

.

"I'd rather be with you" is great on its own, by it's own merits.

dreamy, sexy.. seductive. & simple.

.

Bootsy's 1st real solo slow jam laid the foundation for the other great slow jams Bootsy did during those prime years (1976-80), including ".. telephone bill?" "munchies" "very yes" "as in I love you"

etc.

.

"I'm comin' at you with both hands.. tied behind my back, baby.."

.

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Bruno's catalog is filled with ballads, R&B songs, funk tunes, reggae jams...

But that's an unpopular opinion lol

AGREE. I like Bruno. I have seen him live. I think it is GOOD that he is trying to bring back old sounds from the past and I applaud him for trying to make quality pop music unlike his peers..... HOWEVER, he is not doing anything innovative or doing something original. I think it is down right comical to say he better than a legend who actually innovated a sound, a sound that Bruno Mars actually copies himself.

Little known fact:

While being one of Bootsy's (if not, his most) most recognizable song today, it only peaked at #25 on the R&B Charts in 1976. He had 7 other single chart higher than I'd Rather Be With You (and 2 other tied as they also topped out at 25.)

Everybody borrows from someone give Bruno sometime. I am pretty sure he would not think he was at Boosty's level as a musician. I think it easy to forget about his effect as a bassist. You are righting him off as a musician.

Bruno Mars has potential for sure and he makes great music regardless of it being derivative or borrowed but he is not better than Bootsy, that was the point of his post.

Bootsy helped invent a kind of music. Bruno and Gambino just help celebrate it. They all have their place but lets not confuse who is doing what here.

"Redbone" is a better song, in my ears... im a fan of both men... neither one of them are great "singers"...and Bootsy's career dwarfs anything Gambino has done musically...i just think "Redbone" outdoes its genetic predecessor... now if we were talking about "Bootzilla", or "Bootsy, Whats The Name Of This Town?", then Gambino cant touch it...

it seemed like with Sugarfoot though, that was his more or less his natural vocal tone, while Bootsy was a little more over-the-top and exagerrated with it...

Sigh, Boostsy was making fun of Jimi Hendrix that is how the Bootsy voice came about.

I am not sure Sugarfoot was spoofing Jimi. He said he just was made the singer after Junie got bounced from the group. I think he was just tryig to compensate for not having much of a voice.
