Mariah Carey to Be Honored at VH1’s ‘Hip Hop Honors’ September 11, 2017 Rap-Up You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Why is Mariah being honored at a Hip-Hop Award Show. And why Martin? Arsenio or Keenen over Martin as Hip-Hip influence in the 90s. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Might have something to do with his stupid show being on heavy rotation on that formerly music affiliated network. Gen "whatever"'ers know him from this ♫"Trollin, Trolling! He had a few guest. Biggie, Snoop, Method Man, Yo-Yo, Bushwick Bill. But Arsenio and Keenen had guest on every week. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Well, pretty much all of her later stuff had rappers on it, either on the albums or the remixes. Mariah even did a rap herself on her debut album on the song Prisoner. But Mariah's rhymes probably wasn't used as part of the criteria. I think Mariah gave Nicki Minaj her first mainstream exposure. I think they're desperate to find people to honor. She's collaborated with a lot of rappers, so they figured why not honor her. It's ridiculous of course, but it also elevates their show, having someone of her stature there.

they might as well start giving "HipHop Honors" awards to people like Amber Rose and Kim Kardashian, too then.... they've also "collaborated" (wink wink) with alot of rappers

Um, maybe for being one of the first and biggest star of the time to introduce the "hip hop collaboration" into mainstream pop culture. Not overstating that many rappers owe their careers to her.

Destroyed it how? Rap is bigger all over the world than R&B in itself ever was. Hip hop also influenced mainstream fashion plus art with graffiti. Other than a few that crossed over, most R&B acts didn't sell that much. That was the entire reason for crossover, to get the bigger audiences to possibly make more money. Rappers don't really have to crossover today like an R&B singer or band had to. Rap is already mainstream. Just like rock n roll, which was also an offspring of R&B, sold more than R&B did. If traditional R&B sold a lot, then record companies wouldn't have abandoned it. Hip hop didn't destroy old R&B, the lack of enough of an audience for it to make a big profit did. . There's still people who make traditional R&B, just like in the 1970s & 1980s there was Sha Na Na & The Stray Cats doing 1950s style R&B/doo wop/rockabilly after they long fell out of mainstream popularity. There's Beatles & Pink Floyd tribute bands for the audience who wants to hear that style of music. Orchestras, opera singers, and Renaissance Faire bands still perform music written hundreds of years ago. Some people here always put down Lionel Richie's solo career. But if he stuck with doing whatever the early Commodores were doing, he'd be obscure today and Nicole Richie probably wouldn't have become famous. Do you mean Midnight Star and Ecstasy(Whodini) for the collaboration Rock The Boat? Also Whodini did a collaboration with Millie Jackson on their Open Sesame album way before Mariah and not to mention Run DMC and Aerosmith and the Fat Boys and The Beach Boys. Fat Boys and Force MD's collaborated in 1985. Way before Mariah. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint
