Country's Gentle Giant Don Williams Dead

source

I remember Don Williams so well during my late 70s country phase.

_________________

Don Williams, the Country Music Hall of Fame member whose imposing height and warm, reassuring voice earned him the nickname "Gentle Giant," died Friday, September 8th after a short illness. An internationally popular country star, Williams recorded dozens of hit songs, including "Tulsa Time," "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" and "It Must Be Love." He was 78.

"In giving voice to songs like 'Good Ole Boys Like Me,' 'Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good,' and 'Amanda,' Don Williams offered calm, beauty, and a sense of wistful peace that is in short supply these days," Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young said in a statement Friday. "His music will forever be a balm in troublesome times. Everyone who makes country music with grace, intelligence, and ageless intent will do so while standing on the shoulders of this gentle giant."

I had cable a year or 2 ago and I'd watch reruns of Pop Goes The Country on RFD-TV and Don was on a few episodes of it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

RIP Don!

When I was growing up, my parents were big country music fans and the radio was always tuned to our local country music station.

I hadn't seen anything about this until just now. I'm surprised I hadn't--I wouldn't expect front page on every news site, but I get enough music news I would have expected a mention. He crossed my mind out of nowhere sometime in the last week or so--strange, though I can't say exactly when it was. Maybe I did see something and it just didn't register?

Actually (coming back to edit) now I remember that I just started singing Lord I Hope This Day Is Good for some reason. I think it was on Friday, actually. Hmm.

He will be missed. He was one of my favorites as a kid.
