Is this the earliest example of new wave? It's 1979, at this time when disco/post-disco, funk and rock composed the charts, this weird synthesized, futuristic-sounding song (which to my genuine surprise, was actually became #1 hit in the US at the time) waa released. Is this the very first example of new wave?

Don't know what the earliest is, but this came out in 1978. "Are we not men? We are Devo". You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The earliest stuff was coming out of Europe in the late 1970's; much of it was an adjunct to punk rock but was doing brash music with synthesizers instead of guitars. But there were some American bands that got hip to the new wave sound.
