I just saw her at Chicago's Pitchfork. Amazing show and new album. I think she would have gotten an invite to PP.

Her brand is more interesting than Beyonce's but Solange is also overrated and I'm beginning to believe her brand is contrived, some of her videos seem like she was copying Erykah Badu and performances were try hard to me. That Cradles album won a Grammy but Solange didn't write nor compose any of the songs and I didn't think the overall album was as good as her previous "True" album. I applaud her for collaborating with creative artists and songwriters, however, there are plenty of other singers that are doing what solange "tries" to imitate. She gets called a genius and innovator because she is Beyonce's sister when she is quite generic herself. I personally think Janelle Monae is far more talented, authentic, and interesting than Solange, ArchAndroid is a classic and Electric Lady was great and she didn't get anything for those albums. Even Erykah Badu who she copies is more talented. It's interesting that solange copies these artists but these artists still get overlooked. She does have a pretty voice though and I like some of her songs on True. I would pay to see her in a festival line up with other acts on the bill, definitly not by herself.

I stand corrected.
She is still overrated to me and not better than Janelle Monae or Erykah who she bites a lot of hers style from.

You could be right about all of that, but the simple fact is that Solange put out the album that stuck. Call it timing, or leaning heavily on her influences, but she spent a long time on it and I think the attention, focus, clear vision and sense of self shows in the final product. It's an exceptional album. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I think you're underrating her because she's Beyonce's sister. I used to do the same thing.

Sorry, but is it because she's Beyonce's sister? Her voice is not very good or strong.

She is overrated because she IS Beyonce sister. There are much better artists that put out much more creative music, have stronger voices, and better artists that will never win a Grammy because there not Beyonce's sister. ArchAndroid and Electriclady is better than anything Solange has done and they did not win any Grammys. Solange copies from a lot of artists (that are underrated)and tries too hard to be different and it doesn't come off genuine sometimes, again I applaud her for trying to be creative with her music but I don't think any of it is Grammy worthy. Not sure why you say I'm underrating her when I gave her credit where it was due but there are definitely much more talented singers and artists that don't get the attention/ accolades she receives simply because she is Beyonce's sister, which is the only reason why she won that Grammy.

Well, you already made up your mind not to like her. Even presuming she didn't write AND produce her own album. If you like those albums so much keep listening but you don't have to discredit Solange. I didn't expect to get into her because of the B connection, but I'm glad I put that aside. She has delivered one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. I'm glad she is so young now that she can give us (that want it) even more great music. I love Badu since '97 and I like Janelle but your out of touch to think she is biting them. She deserves the attention and alcolades coming her way.
When have those two delivered something like this (tell me please):

^ No that is not going to work. I objectively gave her credit where it is due but no she is not a Mozart like some of you are making. I said that I thought Solange had a pretty voice (I prefer her singing over Beyonce); and even said I would see her live (of course with other acts on the bill) and I lsaid her brand is interesting and I liked some of her songs from her previous album. I actually prefer her over Beyonce, HOWEVER, I can't help but feel that some of her brand is heavily contrived and copied from other artists. I stand by Janelle, Erykah and others like Jaziman are better songwriters and artists than her but unfornately are overlooked because they are not Beyonce's little sister. I have been objective in this discussion. This site has some weird fascination with the Knowles and act like there are no other contemporary talented female artists or singers that exist, its really REALLY weird. I think its absurd to suggest that Solange being the sister of Beyonce has nothing to do with the recent attention she has received. When I speak of accolades I am not just specifically referring to winning a grammy, I speaking of people calling her a genius, innovator and giving her titles for things and for music that she has heavily copied from others. Its a shame that artists like Janelle Monae are so criminally overlooked and hunny Janelle has made far better music and performances than the above but if its good for you than be happy. This is MY opinion.

Her voice is not very strong but she has a pretty tone but yea I agree she gets a lot of attention because of the Beyonce connection, her music is no different from the artist she copies.

I think I get you now, I wouldn't exaggerate about her talents or calling her a genius or anything. I think she's great and I enjoy her. I listen to plenty of other music to not get to hung up on her. When you've listened to Prince for years it sets a standard for other things. Prince's music is the work of genius.

You were exaggerating Solange talents when you said "when have these two (Badu and Janelle ) delivered something like this" and posted that video. Badu has a TON of similiar songs and has made similiar videos and performances and a bunch of other Neo soul artists like Floetry have done the same thing. The statement implied Solange invented this particular style of music which is false and that is why I reacted the way I did. If you like her that is fine but she is not making music that is original or innovative and her brand is heavily copied from much much underrated artists. That was just my only point.

Never really cared much for Solange before her last project, but it won a grammy and received the critical acclaim it did for good reason. Call it the timing if you'd like, but the content of the album, combined with the pain many of us were/are feeling from the killing of unarmed black men and women, resonated with people. I wouldn't trip over the grammy anyway. Janelle's album has been nominated and lost. Solange only got nominated for best video.

Solange took home her first Grammy, joining sister Beyoncé in the gold trophy party
Solange Knowles finally (and deservedly) joined her sister “Honestly, I feel like I won a long time ago because of all of the connectivity this album has had, particularly with black women,” Knowles said backstage in the press room. Knowles mentioned she had written “Cranes in the Sky” eight years ago, but it kept getting pushed aside. Taken from her breakthrough album “A Seat at the Table,” the song put Knowles in the pantheon of artists unafraid to address politics and social justice in their work. “All that we can do as artists, especially as a songwriter, is to write about the truth,” she said, adding that Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye have been touchstones for her. “I’m grateful to those artists because it’s not easy to do that,” she said, “but we’re not doing anything new.”

Milli Vanilli also won a Grammy

Video, performance, same thing lol. That category is so pointless it isn't even shown live. Janelle at least got one for her album.
I think we all know the grammys are a popularity contest...which brings me back to my original statement(which I noticed you cut half of it off). The album resonated with people throughout the remainder of that year and leading into 2017. It was extremely popular and even debuted at #1. Hence why it was nominated.

You call it reasonating, I call it taking advantage of what is popularly accepted. Because when Trayvon Martin got shot and Michael Brown, Beyonce Solange Jay Z did not say NOT one thing about it until it became popularly accepted and safe too. The fact of the matter is the Archandroid was the best album in its category (far better than Solange 2.0 badu rip off album) whenit was nominated but did not win because Janelle is not Beyonce's sister. The Knowles have been apart of that good boy network at the Grammy committee. Matthew was on the committee for all those years when he was managing Beyonce that is why she has all those Grammys. I think y'all are being extremely naive if you believe Solange won solely on the merit of the album. I think they gave Solange that Grammy to smooth it over with Beyonce losing to album of the year.

"Extremely popular" that's an exaggeration. It went to number one because the RIAA counts streams. It sold 46,000 in pure sales but RIAA added streams which bumped it to 72,000 (to make it go to number one)but the album hasn't sold a lot I don't think it has sold over 200,000 and it did not produce any hits. We won't be talking about Solanges album next year or in 10 years but we will still be talking about Janelle and Erykahs albums, fuq the Grammys seriously. [Edited 8/7/17 10:57am]

Whether her intentions were real or not isn't my point. The point is, the people enjoyed the album and it resonated with them because of the times and content of the music. That can't be argued.
Furthermore, I don't agree with the Billboard charts or any of that shit now days mostly due to the streaming stuff. I don't like seeing folks like Nicki talking about breaking Aretha's record because the game is so much easiest now days, but that's besides the point. The album still debuted at #1. The numbers it did are actually GOOD by 2017 standards. You know very few artists are consistently debuting at 100k+ sold. And again, the people loved it. Black folks across social media sites were raving about it. As I said, I have never cared for her, but the massive amount of attention she got made me want to check the album out. It also made many end of year best album lists with tons of publications. So I don't think i'm over-exaggerating at all. This album had the popularity necessary to carry it over into being nominated during award season.
You think Solange won that pointless performance award because Beyonce lost out? Not at all. If anything, Solanage was SNUBBED at the grammy's. The album itself deserved to be nominated as opposed to just a song considering the other albums that received nominaitons. But I believe that because of the content, she did not get a nomination for the album.
