Butterfly-Mariah Carey-20 years

It's been 20 years since Mimi emancipated herself from tommy motolla and put out this beautiful record

I don't know if it's her best ever though it was consistent start to finish, and I know some argue it was the beginning of the end cause she got criticism for her hip hop image, but to me it was the perfect blend of her authentic self musically merging the old with the new. It even got a special on VH1, let's show love for this one.

  1. Honey
  2. Butterfly
  3. My All
  4. The Roof
  5. Fourth of July
  6. Breakdown (featuring Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone)
  7. Babydoll
  8. Close My Eyes
  9. Whenever You Call
  10. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)
  11. The Beautiful Ones (featuring Dru Hill)
  12. Outside
  13. Honey (So So Def Radio Mix) (featuring Da Brat and JD) (international bonus track)
  14. Honey (Def Club Mix)

  • "Honey" contains a sample of "The Body Rock" by Treacherous 3, and a replay of "Hey DJ", written by Hague, Larkins and Price.
  • "The Roof" contains a replay of "Shook Ones", written by Johnson and Muchita.
  • The So So Def Radio Mix of "Honey" contains a sample of "It's Great to Be Here", written by Perren, Mizell, Gordy and Lussier, and a replay of "Hey DJ", written by Hague, Larkins and Price.
  • "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" contains an interpolation of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, performed by Elton John.

I only liked "Honey" from this album. And her cover of "The Beautiful Ones" is fingernails on a chalk board. This album was the first time I described Mariah as "a cooing pigeon in heat".

definately the beginning of the end for me. Each album got progressivly worse starting with this one. "Mimi" being the exception.

I feel like I liked the album as a whole later on and found it sounded really good in full when played back to back with Mimi or Charm Bracelet; though if measured up next to her self titled debut or daydream, they are like apples and oranges, so to me it's aged like fine wine though it also has a 90's urban time stamp on it too with influences of r&b and hip hop embedded in the grooves

I tend to agree with that. The hits were hit n' miss after Butterfly. While "Honey" was a big hit, her divorce from Motola and her mocking him in the video seemed to be getting more attention. But, it was momentum and proved (for that moment) that any press is good press.

Rainbow

Glitter

Charmbracelet

Mimi

E=MC2

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (pretentious in title alone)

Me. I Am Mariah... blah blah blah - more pretentious bullshit.

Mimi & E=MC2 could have been whittled to one record.

I actually like The Remixes, the 2-CD set. I took disk 2, with the club mixes, arranged them in order of BPM, mixed them, and made a cool long club mix of that disk.

A great album start to finish minus Beautiful Ones (I even unchecked the song from my ipod to not hear it again).

The My All / Stay A While (Remix No Rap) is also one of my favorite tracks from this era. mariah puts Loose Ends classic "Stay A Little While Child" on top of My All for a revamp of a classic 80s jam. Amazing.

This album is very hard to find on vinyl. been looking for years, but nothing under 100.00

I don't own any of her stuff but the girl could sing back in her prime. Don't know what the **** happened to her voice though...

-

"My All" had a beautiful melody and she delivered it well.

-

I loved her harmonies in "Breakdown" whether it was the two-part harmony in the second verse or the harmonies in the vamp, for me that is what made this song worth listening to back then.

Honey is one of the most catchy songs about ejaculate that I have ever heard.

.

I liked My All and The Roof a lot, the Stay Awhile remix of My All is pretty funky for a Dupri production. Breakdown was the jam back then.

Fuck yes he did! The late great Peter Rauhofer did a killer mix for "We Belong Together", too.

They made a great pair. Gotta give Mariah credit as she was one of the first to do a "club remix" with new/re-recorded vocals in comparison to Prince or Madonna who had done alternate versions prior but not with a DJ/producer, maybe with William Orbit on "Electric Chair" but I think most of the vocal was from the original.

falloff

Yes. I actually bought this album after I bought #1's and Rainbow. I fell in love with "The Roof" pretty late and began to like other tracks like "Babydoll" (produced by Missy Elliot), "Outside" (a song about being biracial) and the beautiful and soulful "4th Of July".

Identity

"Babydoll" is one of the most overtly sexual songs in her catalog, which she delivers with smoldering, come-hither vocals. In hindsight, I know it would've made for a great single.

Missy did the thing on that track! Had that Aaliyah flow.
