Any fans of Mtume on here? In particular, of his Jazz era before the "Mtume" group. Recently, I have been really digging both Alkebu-Lan and Rebirth Cycle. I am still in the process of trying to find and listen to all the albums he played on...

Don't know anything of Mtume pre-Mtume as a group but I like to think I'm a fan. Haven't listened to too much of their stuff but I love almost everything I've heard.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Oh yeah. For a good while Mtume was really tearing stuff up ( Forgive me, i know you said "before the Mtume group" ). That 80's dance funk period of theirs(primarily songs from Juicy Fruit ), kept the party going for a good year or so. And they had another good year of having some really nice slow jams(primarily songs from You, Me and He), that were good for some love making...Seriously.
As far as James Mtume's music, before Mtume? I was familiar with what he had done with Miles Davis, and some of his production and songwriting work, but that was about it. I knew he had played on other people's albums, but i never really took the time to seek any of them out. I will now though... I really like that Kawaida album.
One last thing on "Mtume". People really got to give it up for Tawatha Agee. She's a big part of why Mtume was as successful as they were. That woman can sing.
Anyway, much props to James Mtume. He's made some pretty darn good music.
I think i posted this before...

Thanks. I was not familiar with his pre Juicy Fruit works which is weird because I know about his dad and uncle. Jimmy and Percy Heath used to run with my uncle back in the olden days in Philly. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

James Mtume is one of the most brilliant and funkiest brothers I've ever come to know through my musical odyssey. His father was no joke in his day, and in touring and working closely under Miles Davis, hands down, this man's a living legend!
The band Mtume was and is still the truth imo. Loved that band. Their stuff still holds its own today. Of course, Juicy Fruit, will always be the group's signature trademark hit, but growing up as a kid, I definitely and first remember Give It On Up. Not to mention as to how the band within had brilliant producers and songwriters. Aside from Mtume himself and Reggie Lucas, who sparked great chemistry with powerhouse songbird Stephanie Mills and created some of the most monstrous memorable jams ever. Other members from the group such as Hubert Eaves III would go on to D-Train fame. Not to mention Ed "Tree" Moore who'd spark magic of his own with the likes of another powerhouse treasure, Evelyn 'Champagne' King. Tawatha Agee's voice is the main ingredient to that of Mtume. No one like her. She too imo had and still one of the best but underrated solo debuts ever. [Edited 7/24/17 4:38am] [Edited 7/24/17 4:40am]
