Raphael Saadiq: Childhood trauma; touring w/Sheila E./Prince . What an incredible artist he is. I never knew he had such a traumatic childhood. Amazing story of how he auditioned and got to tour with Sheila E., and Prince. . Throughout his childhood years, he sang in gospel groups with friends but his big break came at the age of 18; auditioning to be in Prince protege and drummer Sheila E’s backing band for the Paradetour. He remembers: “I was taught by my dad not to look excited at the point Prince said my name. I played the bass guitar in my audition like Prince meant absolutely nothing to me.” It worked, even if Prince’s non-standard take on masculinity would later come as a surprise. . http://thequietus.com/art...nge-prince
