I honestly don't get why people usually write off Sly's output so quickly after 1973. I think he was still firing on all cylinders on here, and it might be his funkiest album after Riot and Fresh actually. The only song I don't really dig from it is "Le Lo Li", which was a very bizarre choice for the second single. What do you all think?

I consider it an almost classic. If he'd finished the instrumentals on the album and maybe had a few more top tracks it would've been classic. It's still a really solid album and his best post-Fresh.

Definitely a lost diamond.

I love the "Green Eyed Monster Girl" instrumental. One of my favorites from the album. I wish there were more songs with Sly just really showcasing his organ playing. "Rock Dirge" is the only other song that comes to mind...

This site has some great photos from the High on You sessions.

I think it's a great album. It usually gets lost in the shuffle because it was out of print for many years...Plus Sly was considered a "has been" by that time so no one was checking for new music by him..I think it's a great companion record to "Fresh" or "Back On The Right Track".

Finally someone besides myself appreciates this album! I agree that IMO High On You is his best album after Fresh. It's more upbeat compared to Small Talk. I remember always hearing "Thats Lovin' You" and "Green Eyed Monster Girl"and "Crossword Puzzle" which was later sampled by others in the early 90's on the radio. The title cut is one of my favorites. I allways beleived that if this album would have be released before Small Talk it would have been hugh! This album had elements of his earlier works in some respects. If you get a chance listen to "Organise". Its vintage Sly. Also the organ on "Green Eyed Monster Girl" was actually not Sly, instead it was a young kid of 13years that he saw in a church. I feel THIS is his last great album.

Wow, are you sure? I know somone called Little Moses (is this the same person?) is credited for the organ on "I Get High On You", but that is the only song. Then again, I also have read Van Morrison played some keyboards on the album, but he does not appear in the credits.

Also I agree, this was the last truly great Sly album, unfortunately. Although maybe if Sly had finished the original follow-up to this album things might have been different, because the few released songs from the sessions are much better than anything on the HYMMNIB album which seemed to put the final nail in the coffin for Sly...

According to the Higher! set notes, a sequel with a similar band to High on You. I have an interview from late 1975 where he mentions it had no title yet and "about 70 or 80 percent is completed", but he doesn't really go into much detail.

You are correct about Little Moses as he was the young kid on the organ. Heard Ya Missed Me was one of the worst albums he ever did. Also, during that period, The Temptations released an album called Wings of Love. Side one was only balads and side two was music written from the Family Stone but Sly isnt listed on it because it was said that he owed the IRS so the other members received the royalties from it. The album went platinum without a hit single.

I dig all of his post-Family Stone stuff. Back on Right Track, Ain't But the One Way. Sylvester is amazing talent.

"Crossword Puzzle" is my favorite. Love the string and horn arrangements.

There's some great stuff on One Way ("Ha Ha, Hee Hee", "Hobo Ken", "Sylvester") and Back on the Right Track ("Remember Who You Are", "The Same Thing", "Sheer Energy"), but overall I find both lack consistency. I would love to hear the version Sly submitted for One Way which was deemed unacceptable.
