What Jazz Albums Should I Get First (I Have NO Jazz) I just downloaded a song called "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock and realized I have absolutely no jazz whatsoever in my music collection... I think it's about time I started to get into it, what do you guys recommend for albums to start wth? Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. I like "Tijuana Moods" by Charlie Mingus..
really, most anything by him (what I've heard) is quite good.. that is, of course, if you like piano-type Jazz.. Another really good 1 is "Best of Chess Jazz (Vol 1, I think).. though it seems the cd doesn't have as many songs as the cassette has (!) also, it's hard to go wrong with Miles Davis, e.g. "Sketches of Spain" or "Bitches Brew".. really, there is SO MUCH good jazz out there (a lot of which I'm still learning about & getting into) you'll likely find some good stuff to get into, & then build on.. That's too broad a question. Really depends on what type of Jazz you want. Traditional, Dixieland, Fusion? If you dig Herbie check his shit from the late 70's/ early 80's as well as "Dis Is Da Drum" from the 90's. Also along these same Jazz/Funk lines you might want to pick up some George Duke (76-81) and Stanely Clarke (School Days) Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

My suggestions are some albums that most beginners can get into. I don't think these will overwhelm you:
john coltrane-a love supreme miles davis-kind of blue billie holiday (any compilation set) thelonious monk-monk ella fitzgerald & louis armstrong (i forget the titles but i think there are only 2 albums with them performing together...both are excellent!) or you could pick up ken burns' jazz soundtrack. it is the soundtrack to ken burns' jazz history special (from about a year ago). it's very comprehensive and great for beginners. have fun! | |

Kind of Blue is a total must have. It's awesome and its reputation is totally justified. If U like Maiden Voyage buy that album (called erm, Maiden Voyage) it's a classic 2. Best Mingus album has 2 B Ah Um not a bad track on that one. Tread carefully with Miles if your not familier with him it can be a bit of a lottery in that he covered (or rather invented) so many genres. U might love say the above mentioned Kind of Blue and then buy Bitches Brew which is a a very sinister sounding and challenging album.I love it personally but it took me a long time 2 appreciate. Teddy really helped me in terms of learning the basics. See, when you wanna be a jazz pianist you gotta listen 2 these cats 1st and you should listen carefuly cuz the simple thangs in their playing are the most important parts. Hell lol I wouldn't tell nobody 2 listen 2 them carefuly cuz they can def capture yo attention one way or another. | |

The first jazzalbum I ever bought is 'L'ascenseur pour l'echaffaud' by Miles Davis. It's a movie-soundtrack and still my favourite, very smooth. I still like it even better than 'Kind of Blue'. Who likes it too here? | |

Simpliesity is the MOST thang that captures my attention, thats why you see me praising Teddy everywhere.If you have these 3 qualities then you're #.1 in my book. I'm not really too deep wit Monk's stuff as I am with Teddy, but from what I know his stuff are nothing to be missed with too. You and daddy should chill 2ghether since he's a fan too. All I could say is give me a time 2 dig into his stuff. | |

U could do a lot worse than start with the "Maiden Voyage" album. If u enjoy that, u could perhaps try "Headhunters" or "Thrust". Asides from Herbie, accessible work of outstanding quality in this genre includes "Places and Spaces"(Donald Byrd),"School Days/Live At The Greek"(Stanley Clarke),"Kind Of Blue/In A Silent Way(Miles Davis),"A Love Supreme/Giant Steps(John Coltrane),"Weather Report/Black Market"(Weather Report),"Speak No Evil/Juju"(Wayne Shorter),"Bright Size Life/Pat Metheny Group"(Pat Metheny),"Getz Gilberto"(Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto),"Time Out"(Dave Brubeck Quartet),"Artistry"(Martin Taylor),and "In A Soulful Mood"(Charlie Parker). I like/love many of the suggestions above but if you really have NO jazz, then maybe you should forget about most of them.
As a first step into jazz, MILE'S KIND OF BLUE is the album. It is so beautiful and easily accessible! That's where I started about 10 years ago, and it is still one of my all-time favorites. And since it is the jazz album that sold most in jazz history, this view seems to be widely shared (including by many of the orgers above who have included it in their list0. | |
