Unsung Summer Edition 2017 TV One’s signature music biography series returns this summer to shed a much-deserved light on the many influential, talented and, R&B, soul, funk, hip hop, disco and gospel artists of the last 30 years. In it’s ninth season, Unsung continues its tradition as the benchmark in uncovering the personal triumphs and struggles of musical legends like Wyclef Jean, Marvin Sapp, Jagged Edge, Switch, The Dramatics, Shanice and Ice-T!Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Switch and The Dramatics should be good episodes, but I don't really care about the others

I wonder why people here always make the same old comments about this show. 98% of the performers already profiled on this show aren't really "unsung" as in little known, that includes the Unsung Hollywood version too. Some have had crossover success. At least they're getting profiled in some way because they didn't get attention from Behind The Music and music magazines who always write about the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, & Beatles. I can find many books about Elvis Presley, David Bowie, John Lennon, and even the Grateful Dead & Yoko Ono, but not about the O'Jays and Johnnie Taylor. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Since they worked on Ice-T's 1st single, I wonder if Jam & Lewis are going to be on his episode You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Thanx for the post. I just assumed Sam would be considered Unsung because of his sudden death so early in his career. To this day My parents swear nobody comes close to him vocally.

Good list! (in addition to the previous poster's as well)
I kinda figured that SWITCH was only going to be relegated to the side story of the DEBARGE episode. I used to know Greg Williams from my studio days. Nice bunch of guys. I'm sure they'd LOVE to be the focus of an episode.
I wish these episodes were ALL on demand...but unfortunately theyre not (for my service at least).
....How about one on Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes?...also ..I know MAZE (feat Frankie Beverly) get clout in the black community (and musician community sometimes)....but they too have caverns worth mining.....also ROY AYERS/UBIQUITY doesn't get his due

I'm a 90s kid that is my era. But they're getting too recent IMO. Jagged Edge come on. We need stories on past legends. How about an episode on the girl group craze of the early 60s like the Ronettes, Shirelles, Crystals, Chiffons, ect Motown,.Stax and Philly Soul always get love. But what about the forgotten Chicago sound of the 60s? PRINCE: Always and Forever

They might be too ancient for the audience they're trying to reach. They're probably not going for the Murder She Wrote/Matlock age group. Unsung's been doing 90s acts for awhile now like Montell Jordan, Hi Five, DJ Quik, Geto Boys, etc. The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame have been inducting 90s acts in recent years too. At least some of the 1970s & 1980s acts still get airplay, so people today might know them. What regular free radio stations nowadays play The Shirelles? I remember in the 1990s, there was talk that En Vogue was going to act in a biopic about them. I think PBS had a documentary about girl groups years ago. I know they ran one for Doo Wop and about a month ago PBS ran a miniseries documentary called American Epic, which is about the early record industry. It came on every Tuesday for 4 weeks. Robert Redford is one of the people behind it. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. I have no problem with the rap acts from the 90s. Hell that all they have to choose from 90s or 80s. Sp DJ Quik and E-40 episodes were good. Some of the more boring ones have been the 90s singers like Dave Hollister and Jon B. PRINCE: Always and Forever

1990 is almost 30 years ago, so it is the past for the younger generations. There's people who have never lived in a world where hip hop has not existed. Sanford & Son wasn't the 1960s girl group era. It was the 1970s. Anyway TV is different from radio. There's many channels (even on free non-cable/satellite TV) and they have to fill it up with something. I've seen a channel that shows Amos & Andy reruns. I Love Lucy has never been off the air and one of the channels (I think CBS) sometimes show newly colorized episodes of Lucy. In the past there were 3 networks (ABC, NBC, CBS), public television (PBS) and a few local stations on the UHF dial. So there was less need for a lot of programming to fill hundreds of TV channels. Doesn't TV One have the show R&B Divas? That's pretty much singers from the 1990s and 2000s. There's nobody from the 1960s on the show. I Love The 90s tours have been popular for a few years now. There was a recent movie remake of Baywatch, and most of the TV show was in the 1990s. Xscape has recently reunited and theres a tour with BBD, SWV, and En Vogue. The 1990s are in. Even Unsung Hollywood doesn't have much pre-1970s, maybe Dick Gregory. They've done Viveca Fox & Meagan Good. It's doubtful that they're trying to reach an older audience with Meagan.
