Do you understand the definition of overrated?

No other rapper has as many Grammys as Jay Z.

Jay Z is the most critically acclaimed rapper.

And now he is being inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame OVER Madonna and George Michael nuts

By definition, he IS the most overrated rapper. No other rapper has the acclaim and accolades he has and no he is not deserving of it, there are far more talented rappers than him before, during AND after his time.

i may be inclined 2 agree.

regarding hiphop...who cares about Grammys????...no REAL hiphop fan gives any credence to what Grammy does with their awards... weve known for years those awards are industry popularity contests for the puppets and puppet masters...fuck a grammy...

But because he has the most grammys for rapper (a commercial indicator of being the best) by definition he IS overrated. For crying out loud, Jay Z has more grammys than Prince, Marvin Gaye, MJ, etc. He is overrated, VERY overrated.

thats because he has been the most commercially viable rapper ever...he not only makes/made money off himself, but off of seversl other money making artists...which in turn makes more money for the label execs hes been partered up with...jayz stays puttin money in "Their" pockets...thats why "they" honor him so much...but to say he is overrated as a MC, is a reach... thats like saying Denzel Washington is overrated just because hes getting old and flabby, and doesnt look like Bleek Gilliam anymore

Jay Z is nowhere near the most overrated rapper of all time..i agree he has fallen off (but in all fairness, how many 47 year old MCs you know?), but his legacy was cemented by his work from Reasonable Doubt, up until The Black Album, maybe even Kingdom Come....i can name SEVERAL far more "overrated rappers of all time" than Hov...

Eminem

Lil Wayne

Future

T.I.

Missy Elliott

Snoop Dogg

Outkast (both of them)

3 Stacks could have been a top 10 MC had he been more prolific and more focused on rhyming. When he spits he's fire.

Well, he's slowed down in the past 10 years or so but between 94-05, Outkast released 8 albums.

Andre 3000 is hardly overrated in my book; he's probably underrated. I think Eminem is a fantastic
rapper but, his flow is kinda annoying.

My favorite flow of all time is Biggie and then Andre 3000.

His rep is inflated but I don't think he's the MOST overrated because in his prime his skills were legit. I prefer to think of him as LL 2.0.

I would take LL over Jay-Z in a heartbeat. Nas should be where Jay-Z is; Jay-Z is just savvier,
which is most unfortunate.

There are more Grammys given out in this era than in the past. Hell James Brown never won a Grammy (I don't think) but Macklemore has. So it's not always who's the best. I seriously don't know how Macklemore beat out Kendrick and J Cole for a Hip-Hop Award.

Hip Hop is more than just an era and rapping. The above MC's embody hip hop more in their music and song lyrics than Jay Z and they are far more talented. Jay Z might be more critically acclaim (that is a fact) and he might be more commercially successful (that is also a fact) but he is not more legendary or influential than some of the above MC's and he damn sure ain't more talented. Being commercially successful doesn't mean you are the most talented.

I know you don't like Jay, but stop it. lol

This is from August 96 issue of Source. Before the fame, Beyonce, ect. His album gets 4 mics just like Nas'. That's his first album by the way. That album is usually considered ine of the most influential Hip-Hop albums of all-time.

You throw a hissy fit every time someone calls him overrated. Objectively, he is overrated. If you are not a fan, why do you get so defensive? The bolded is YOUR opinion maybe if you listen to more real hip hop your mind might change.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but check the lyrics on Caught Their Eyes. He namechecks the Prince estate situation:

"I sat down with Prince, eye to eye/He told me his wishes before he died/Now, Londell McMillan, he must be color blind/They only see green from them purple eyes/They eyes hide, they eyes high/My eyes wide shut to all the lies/These industry niggas, they always been fishy/But ain't no Biggie, no lazy eye, huh/This guy a slave on his face/You think he wanted a master with his Masters?/You greedy bastards sold tickets to walk through his house/I'm surprised you ain't auction off the casket/Don't big bro me, don't big homie/I've seen pure admiration become rivals/I've been to Paris at least two times/I've seen the Eiffel, I've seen an eye full"

I figured he'd save his POV for his music. I was curious to know what he thought of the whole estate situation.

I know nothing of JayZ's discography, but it is an interesting take and one that I'm sure a lot of people/fams had on their mind.
