One Album Wonders I know there has been a lot of talk about one hit wonders, but how those one album wonders (an artist who put one good album and has dozens of hits of it, but can't make up for it on their next one). I know you know some one album wonders that were out there> I know a couple:

Back in late 1986 and throughout 1987,it certainly looked like Club Nouveau would be around for a long time.Their debut album had one big hit single after another: "Jealousy","Situation Number 9","Lean On Me","Why You Treat Me So Bad" and "Heavy On My Mind".This was one of the biggest R&B albums from that era.
But,alas,it wasn't meant to be.I have a theory on why they didn't last.Their "leader" Jay King simply ruined things for them. He's known as a cocky, arrogant, overly controlling guy who sabotaged their career. In mid-1987,pop superstar Madonna asked them to be the opening act on her hugely successful 'Who's That Girl' tour. She was playing stadiums on that tour.Club Nouveau would have been exposed to their biggest audience yet, giving them major pop exposure. But Jay turned down her offer, saying "We don't need Madonna and she doesn't need us" That was a boneheaded move on Jay's part.
As if that wasn't emough,he was feuding with his bandmates Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster.Do those names sound familiar? They should.Just a few years later, those two guys became a really popular production duo. Most notably, they created and produced EnVogue, giving them numerous hits throughout the 90s.Jay chased them out of Club Nouveau and,not surprisingly, the hits dried up for Club Nouveau.Hmmm,I wonder why In any case,Club Nouveau never had another hit album again. One major debut album and then they were has-beens.

I specifically said "One Album Wonders", not One Hit Wonders!

yeah, throughout the years I have heard alot of unflattering stories about Jay King I really think that he is the reason why his band,Club Nouveau, faded away so quickly without having any other major hits after 1987.His ego and arrogance ruined things.

I think Frankie is like A-ha. They are mainly known for one hit in the USA, but had popularity in European countries. The Fugees Terence Trent Darby I would say Sheila E but A Love Bizarre saved her sophomore album but I liked her first 4 albums. Yeah Jay King was wild as hell back in the day. As much as he didn't get along with some of his bandmates he remained loyal to Valerie Watson the female lead in Club Nouveau and was good friends with Michael Cooper and others in the industry. Don't laugh at my funk

What is he saying about 'Into The Skyline'?...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
They had a few #1's in the UK, they owned 1984 there and were huge in Europe and Asia too. Look outside wherever you are. You could find info like that on wikipedia easily. You should start calling your threads "Here's what i like on youtube part zzzz" Or just post another Debarge thread.. or something.

Not too sure I don't know how it was received in the rest of the world but here in the US, Cathy's second album 'Into The Skyline' got heavy radio play; spawning two Top 10 singles on the Adult Contemporary chart, a Top 20 on the Dance Club chart, and a Top 40 on the Hot 100 chart. Not too shabby for an album that got limited to no support from MTV and pop radio. [Edited 4/29/17 12:06pm]
