thread says performer not singer. whitney, then mariah in that regard. we all know that. so as it relates to performer, whitney as living color spoofed was the queen of her rhythmless nation! madonna is a master at theatrics and can keep things intersting and visually riveting but she her self did not do anything above average from a performance standpoint. mariah can belt, but to see her in concert would be torture, i need not explain further. thus its Janet. seen her several times to confirm it. partial lip-synching or not. to quote "bonnie rait", she's a sparkplug of funk! haters be gone, its the truth, recent challenges notwithstanding, if not for nipplegate and the subsequent blacklist, she'd still pack arenas more easily. unbreakable had at least 3 more top 20 pop/r&b singles
It is, unless you really enjoy just looking at her stand there.
.
I take a broad definition of performing, since as far as I'm concerned, all early 90s Mariah had to do was sit on a stool and take a little stroll across the stage and I'd be happy. No need for dance moves when you have a pair of lungs like she used to:

I adore Janet; she was my first celebrity crush, WHYDFML will always be in my top 10 fav tunes, and Pleasure Principle is indeed a sublimely choreographed video. But if I had the choice between attending a show by either Janet or Mariah in their prime, Mariah would win out.

golden pipes mariah had, but NO WAY, she'd EVER top seeing janet on her debut tour for RN1814. she didn't tour for Control, so there was definitely pent up demand. The Joe (JLA in detroit) was PACKED and she more than delivered! i'm not sure i've experienced a more electric atmosphere. she was almost orgasmic, even in all black head to toe! i'd need to stretch or something after ballad #4 with mariah
When you have a voice like Mariah, you don't really have to go up there and move because you can move people with your voice (but then again this is Mariah, she has a one of a kind voice she is probably the only singer after Whitney that could get away with just standing on stage), I agree with that but the question was who was the best "performer."
Janet is the greatest female performer of all time. Bad bish, nobody can step to her on the floor. Tina Turner comes a close second and then Madonna (who also was a great performer as well I just finish watchig Girlie Show).
Nippy and Mariah shouldn't be in this conversation because they weren't dance artists, they were vocalists (so its not really fair). HOWEVER, Whitney was a DAMN good performer and had tremendous stage presence, PASSION and charisma. She was JUST AS great of a performer as Janet even without back up dancers and spectacle, she didn't need it. I haven't watched enough of Mariah's prime performances to give a fair assessment but she wasn't a better performer than Whitney.
Not sure why Beyonce and Rihanna are mentioned in the same conversation as Janet and Madonna. Janet and Madonna were way superior performers, dancers and were more entertaining on stage than them AND so was Whitney.
I can't dispute Janet, and wouldn't want to. BUT "Vision of Love" is in a class by itself compared to everything else on pop radio at the time. Some of that same stellar sense of harmonic progression can be heard later in "All I Want For Christmas Is You". Class, sass, and she got a a-- amazing vocal range.

That's not Janet doing the back flip!
She has done black flips. She was very athletic. No other female performer can touch Janet.
Couldn't disagree with you more, about Whitney. She was thee most boring concert performer I have ever seen. Ist time I saw her, we were far back, and we totally lost interest. Second time we were 3 rd row centre and could see her very well. She couldn't dance a lick and for the most part stood on stage like a parking meter. She got horrific reviews and rightly so. I saw her about 9 years later, and her voice wasn't as good; but she had more of a stage show with back up dancers, yet she was still very average. She didn't reach out to the audience and make a connection with them. Like Tina Turner or Donna Summer. She absolutely needed the stage show and back up dancers. Her so-called stage presence and charisma didn't translate into a good concert performer. Great concert performer - Bette Milder - there's a woman who put on a show - not to be equalled.

Not sure what show you saw.
This performance is right up there with Janet Jackson and Tina Turner. This performance of Whitney just standing on stage by herself has so much passion and charisma and better than anything that has came out in the 21st century. Stop the lies. Whitney sang the hell out of this song.
