Video: Bruno Mars posts Prince tribute rehearsal footage to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the "Purple Rain" album Bruno Mars posts rehearsal footage of his Grammy Awards Prince tribute performance to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the release of the "Purple Rain" album. "33 years ago this Sunday, Prince and his band, The Revolution, released Purple Rain, one of the most important albums of all time. To celebrate the anniversary weekend, here’s a behind the scenes look of us rehearsing for the tribute we did at the 59th Grammy Awards." https://m.youtube.com/wat...ol9_yg8H8s

"Shite" is generous. He already copies off Prince heavily. Him wearing the Purple Rain outfit left an awful taste in my mouth. "Like the drummer said, you got to die."

Bruno started out as an Elvis impersonator at age 4. I think maybe the Prince outfit was a nod to that but it just did not work. [Edited 6/22/17 17:05pm] Brand new boogie without the hero.

Geez, ya' ll hate everyone who pays tribute to Prince. I prefer the likes of Bruno, Sheila and the Revolution paying tribute, playing his music and keeping his name in the spotlight than ex-wives writing gossip books defaming him. Thank you Bruno!

It showed the GRAMMY's had no clue about PRINCE. For a guy who preffered Female artists and vocalists and band members there was no sign of a WOMAN in that tribute at all, just the TIME who were gracious with their feelings, and then Bruno playing trick or treat going to a costume party, almost as tacky as Gaga the year before. I thought Bruno did a decent job. Where was all this criticism the night of Grammys?

Oh they criticized him all right... In the Prince forum there was about 6 threads all bashing Bruno's set.
Like get the fuck out of here, all you old, nasty orgers who think you know Prince better than he knew himself can go cry a river.
Prince would've approved of Bruno's tribute just as much he would've approved Sheila E's, Kravitz's, D Angelo's... because there's one essential thing to consider: The iconography of Prince's Purple Rain... when you see dancers all over the world wearing an MJ Thriller jacket, or Beat It jacket, dancing like zombies... that's when you know how iconic Thriller was... This is why Bruno wore the exact outfit Prince did in the movie, because this is a popularizing way of paying tribute... that was a righteous homage to the movie, to the fans, to the spirit of Purple Rain, Bruno did exactly the same choreography of Prince's LGC set... that's the root definition of a tribute... IF you wanna pay tribute to Charlie Chaplin, you wear his outfit and go on stage and mimic him because that's gonna remind the audience of how cool he was, how funny he was and how monumental the outfit is... Now, of course you can show respect to his craft in many ways, but that form of tribute (what orgers blatantly describe as 'karaoke') is what exactly honors the inner force of the act that Prince pulled off in the picture & album.
Why didn't y'all bash Janelle Monae the same way you do with Bruno when she wore this:
Or Erykah Badu:
Or Jennifer Hudson:
The only genuine reason for your bombastic critique of Bruno's performance is because you can't stand the guy, just say it If you're a true fan of Prince's, you'll appreciate that he's been paid tribute that way, with the Purple Rain outfit, exact choreorgraphy, guitar solo. But no, your stinky, butthurt old asses are stuck in 87 and worship Prince so much you can't get out of your bubble.

I am out of the bubble. Prefer tributes to the MAN. Not the Purple Rain album/movie bubble. Does your sig line apply to you Shawy89? You seem pretty angry yourself. [Edited 6/23/17 12:40pm] Brand new boogie without the hero.

The disdain the org has for Bruno is unfounded. Here is a guy that ALWAYS acknowledges Prince and his influence. He geniunely respects Prince and never misses an opportunity to say how much Prince has touched his life. Im glad they chose Bruno Mar to do the tribute. I rather him than some random pop star who doesn't truly respect Prince. The fact that he is posting the rehearsal video to recognize the legacy of the Purple Rain album shows that he truly respects him. I would think Prince fans would be happy about this.... Can't win for losing [Edited 6/23/17 10:28am]

Can't win for losing [Edited 6/23/17 10:28am] I know your comment isn't directly aimed at me but as much as I can appreciate what Bruno Mars was trying to do, I just don't think his performance was good. The song didn't suit him. The outfit definitely didn't suit him. There was just something off about the whole thing. I think he would have been better off doing something like Let's Work or Sexy Dancer. I'll admit that I'm not his biggest fan (although Chunky is fantastic) and I don't like many of his songs, but I like how he pays homage and brings new audiences to musical genres that don't much attention from younger listeners (people my age and below). In that respect, he was a good choice to perform a tribute to Prince. But like I said, the song choice was wrong and he didn't do it justice.

I understand. Its not just this thread though. The org has a odd disdain for him and I will never understand it. I didn't think the tribute was THAT bad but that's my opinion.

I remember when his album came out there was a lot of unwarranted negativity around it alright. He's good at what he does, if you're into that. I'm personally not but I'll gladly take him over the majority of what's charting these days.

At first, I didn't like the performance by Bruno. It seemed very karaoke and like he was trying to hard. However, I do admire the heart/class he showed trying to honor Prince. As far as todays pop artists go, he is an ideal choice (vs people like Drake, Katy Perry, etc).
Much like Kravitz and the various performers of the BET awards in 2016 (Monae, Badu), the only critique I have is that these tributes are 1980's centric. Otherwise, I enjoyed them for what they are/were.

I kinda felt this way as well which is why I couldn't call it the best performance of the night although it was second to Tribe Called Quest performance. I did admire the passion and heart he put into honoring Prince in the performance.

I like Bruno a lot, but the outfit didn't suit him well. Let's Dance would have been much better. In the other hand, the Kravit's tribute, that was something else.

He is talented and yes loves Prince that is not the issue, let's celebrate here. What I said was in bad taste was the dress up and also the fact that Prince was all about women and their voice and in his work and bands etc...and not a woman in sight at this tribute. No one is taking away from Bruno doing his best to recreate Prince and purple rain for the millionth time on the Grammys but there was a bit more to Prince than one record and year. No one did any thought into this.
