you're right...IMO he had the greatest voice of any male singer ever...no disrespect to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, or Sam Cooke...but Luther was so effortless in his approach...not alot a vocal acrobatics and histrionics and screaming ... no over the top machismo, or sexuality, or pimpery...even the two most important people in his his band (Nat Adderly Jr., and Marcus Miller) were criminally underrated...people acknowledge Marcus Miller for his greatness on bass, but not enough credit goes to Nat Adderly Jr. for the way he accompanied Luther on piano/keyboards...he played such beautifully haunting, but minimalist keyboard lines, that they/he get overlooked easily...he might play just 3 or 4 notes in 2 bar frame but the melodies are so rich, that it propels Luther's already heavenly voice deep into the soul of the listener... the keyboard lines on "Better Love' and "See Me" are great examples of the subtle quiet genius of keyboardist Nat Adderly Jr.... | |
