Nowadays, radio is not the only way to determine popularity. That's why Billboard uses streaming as part of their chart criteria today and the RIAA consider a certain amount of plays as a "sale" of an album. So that means it's possible to get a gold or platinum album without selling anything, not even the purchase of a download.
