With the apparent suicide of Chris Cornell, could this be the last of the Generation X rock gods to perish under a marose cloud of toxic cynicism?

I embraced grunge and cynical detatchment back in the 90's. It spoke to me. But with the early destruction of such highly visible lives going one after the other it's hard to get behind a movement that seems to be so destructive.

I wonder, after all this time, if the generation left it's ironic detatchment behind. It seemed like we embraced the consumerist culture that we were shut out of back in the 90's but maybe I was wrong. Maybe ironic detatchment and world-worn cynicism is something you don't easily outgrow.

I think its more the youth now that is more depressed, it I think it stems from the culture and the rise of Social Media and the images being out there and bullying and LIKES and views and clicks actually effected how people think in life is the reason or at least one reason why many younger people feel sometimes they never IN or will do what they have to for LIKES and views, "please like my page" etc...I do believe that this is playing into their thinking.

That's because most people on Social Media are living a lie, pretending their lives are fabulous, and faking it, then when they're forced to face their truth, as soon as they log off, they become deeply depressed about their "real" lives. They follow the lives of their favorite celebs, worshipping them and trying to live exactly like them, only fooling themselves because they don't have the money or means to, and that adds to the depression they already have. Did you ever notice how all the generation look alike? They all speak alike, have the long weaves, wear the same makeup, all have the same bodies, with butt lifts, tattoos, clothes, purses, shoes, etc, etc, etc. No one has their own identities anymore, it's really quite scary.

I think this thread is making too many assumptions and drawing conclusions from stereotypes
and then generalizing without any type of justification and/or warrant. Just because Generation
X has many famous members who were cynical and/or depressed who suicided possibly as a re-
sult of being so cynical and depressed doesn't mean cynicism and depression are characteristics
that best capture the entire generation.

They were definitely very different from the boomers and wanted different things, but I think Gen X got ragged on the way millenials are getting ragged on now.

You are absolutely correct with this statement! I have not read anything as truthful in ages. I refuse to use social media (with the exception of this site). I think it's a complete waste of time and only allows people to live a lie and be someone other than who they really are. Bravo for speaking the truth. Hopefully someone will read your comments and make some changes and get back their own identity again and get off social media and start living a real life.

I can't think of hearing much about GenX, beyond "there go the latchkey kids" but plenty on Baby Boomers and Gen Y., tho'. Gen X gets some dap in today's advertising, at least. I wonder how many X'ers choose to identify with the Grunge music, anyway--seems like a dead-end to me.
