Kanye West The College Dropout vs Prince 1999 Which one do you think is better?
Best songs of 1999 from critical point of view. 1999 Little red corvette
Best songs of The College Dropout from critical point of view. All Falls Down Jesus Walks Slow Jamz Through The Wire
1999 is prince the mad scientist creating real atmospheric songs that are long and full of changes.
TCDO is Kanye trying to make it as a new artist and showing his skills as a mc and producer.
I personally like both of these albums and I enjoy relistening to both of these as they bring me joy each time.

Automatic, something in the water, lady cab driver, international lover, even little red corvette all those songs are long experimental type songs with all the synth orchestration. I was trying to do a comparison less a vs.

It just happens the the popular songs on both albums happen to be the critical highlights.

No joke I just listened to both back to back and their equally as enjoyable to me. 1999 is like entering a different world. And the college dropout is so heartfelt and endearing.

As a fan of both, it is a really interesting comparison.
Kanye had already made his name as a producer a few years before The College Dropout. I do like the sped up soul/R&B samples and most of the tracks are excellent. Even the skits work within the context of the overall album. The album does have a couple fillers (Last Call, the last song was unnecessary). Lyrically, Kanye can't flow like Nas or even Jay-Z, but what he does works for him because the production/beats are so good. Sonically, began a string of really good Kanye albums that ended at My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Became a caricature of himself as the years went forward.
1999, when viewed in the context of the era it was released, was a Prince at the genesis of his creative run. My favorite album by Prince in the 1980's. Lyrically, by the numbers Prince, but some of the instrumentation/production was really trippy. Lady Cab Driver and Something in the Water showcased the excess and minimalism in his production. By the 1999 album, he was already among the top 2-3 musicians of the era. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."
