Madonna's "Keep It Together" sounds so much like Prince.

I am listening to the album "Like A Prayer" for the first time...my girlfriend just got it on loan from her uni's music library.

Anyhow, it has the song written with Prince "Love Song"...which is fine...

But the song "Keep it Together" is very funky in a Prince/Mpls kinda way.

Just an homage/ripoff or was Prince involved?

rumor has it that Prince played bass on the song. but having followed both of their careers very closely for the past decade, the only time i've ever heard this rumor was here, and it has never been substantiated as more than just a rumor.

yeah, that one was produced by Madonna & Prince. it's where you'll hear the guitar part Prince recorded for the song LAP (it wasn't used on the album version of LAP, but on Act Of Contrition and one of the remixes of LAP).

you can hear a very tiny bit of it on the 7" single remix for it (the one you generally hear on the radio). but it's only a very small snippet in the fade-out. chances are you won't be able to find this one, and it's a minimal contribution anyway.

there's a Japanese EP that has a bunch of LAP and Express Yourself remixes that you can find fairly easy. i don't remember which one it is. it's not the dance mix, or the extended mix... i think they're titled "club mixes" (there's a 7" one and a 12" one on the CD, i believe). the beat is similar to Bob George, and I *think* Prince's guitar playing can be heard on them. but it's been a long time since i listened to that EP.

yes. that's the easiest place, and only confirmed place, that you can hear the guitar part Prince recorded for the song LAP. it was used on this track instead. it may or may not be on a few of the songs remixes. hard to tell. and i haven't listened to them in a very long time, so i can't remember exactly.

Here are Prince's contributions to the 'Like A Prayer' album...

***Prince co-wrote and co-produced "Love Song" with Madonna. He also sings on it.

***Prince plays guitar on "Keep It Together"

***He also plays guitar on the 12" version of the title track and his guitar work can also be heard on "Act Of Contrition".

IAM

there was a thread here not too long ago.

i beleive the topic was something like "did prince compose WATERFALLS for TLC".

in that thread it went on into ridiculous things like he wrote SO EMOTIONAL for WHITNEY HOUSTON and so on.

anyway it got into someone stating that MADONNA refered to P as the pope when in fact that's the nickname she has for her brother.

to prove it, someone posted an interview from somewhere in which she talked in detail about P's involvment in LIKE A PRAYER.

she said that he played guitar in "act" and "keep it together"
they mailed each other ideas for "LOVESONG" and worked on it over the phone.

only reason i remember this is because i went and bought that cd and he's not listed on "ACT" or "KEEP IT TOGETHER"
and i love that disc and have been playing it ever since.

Oh wise DavidEye, do you know which of the 12" remixes of Like A Prayer Prince played on?

I'll have to pull out my vinyl and check it out...

biggrin

Here are the tracks that appear on the 12" maxi-single of "Like A Prayer"...

"Like A Prayer" (12" Dance Mix)
"Like A Prayer" (12" Extended Remix)
"Like A Prayer" (Churchapella)
"Like A Prayer" (12" Club Version)
"Like A Prayer" (7" Remix/Edit)
"Like A Prayer" (Non-Stop Express Mix)
"Like A Prayer" (Stop and Go Dubs)
"Like A Prayer" (Local Mix)

Prince's guitar playing can be heard on the 12" Club Version and the 7" Remix/Edit version that follows. In fact, his guitar solo concludes these versions.
