Original Shalamar vs Shalamar 2.0 I consider myself a huge Shalamar fan. I own many of their albums and continue to listen to them on a regular basis. Howard Hewett has one of the greatest voices of all time in my opinion and I love Jody Watley, however my favorite album by Shalamar is Heartbreak featuring new members, Micki Free and D'Lisa Davis. I love the funky new wave direction they went in. Do you guys have a preference over which version of the group you like? I'm seriously torn. [Edited 5/3/17 0:46am]

I really love Shalamar also...in fact the whole Solar Roster is great But I have to go with Howard & Jody years....to me the greatest albums are 1981 - Three For Love ; 1982 - Friends ; and 1983 - The Look
however there are a few songs off Heart Break I love as well Amneis, Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills, My Girl Loves Me, and of coarse Dancing In The Sheets

Excellent songs. That entire album is the shit! I also love the Look album, with Jody and Jefferey. Their last album together.

Isn't that the session singers from the first album with Uptown Festival? You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

my favorite Shalamar album is Friends.

and the only Shalamar I've ever cared about is the Howard-Jody-Jeffrey line-up

I meant the Howard-Jody, etc line up. Didn't know there was an earlier line up. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

There were 3 lineups before Howard . That's still not as many members as have been in The Temptations, which had around 20 different people over their career. When Jody and Jeffrey left in 1983,that's when I lost interest in Shalamar. That 1984 album,'Heartbreak' is a joke.Even Howard agreed: when it flopped,he went solo.

Heart Break was released at a bad time....the competition of releases in Dec '84 was fierce....Teena Marie's 'Starchild', Kool & The Gang's 'Emergency' and Labelmates Midnight Star 'Planetary Invasion' On a different note...I think I like Midnight Star much more than Shalamar I loved them with the Calloway brothers....but I liked em just as well without!

That's a pretty strong statement because all 3 of those other albums were fire. I never heard the Heartbreak album but I have love for Circumstancial Evidence with Micki, Delisa, and Justin but Howard,Jody, and Jeffrey are the classic lineup. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

SoulAlive is right. Heartbreak was bullshit.Just like the Commodores album Night shift this album sounds like the soundtrack to cheesy 80's movies. Don't laugh at my funk

Heart Break isn't all that....it's an alright album....but it didn't have a hit for the general public....Dancing In The Sheets hit the Billboard R&B chart #18, but it had already been out for quite a while from the Footloose soundtrack at the beginning of the year....Amnesia didn't even hit the Top 40, it came in at #49...My Girl Loves Me hit #22, and Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills was #79...they lost that special magic when Jody and Jeffrey left But the others I mentioned all had that kick....Teena Marie had her first (and only) Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 with 'Lovergirl', and there was no stopping the double platinum 'Emergency' from Kool & The Gang (their biggest selling album) and Midnight Star finally had that #1 R&B Old School classic with 'Operator' (it should have come first with Freak-A-Zoid) These albums were mentioned because they were all released same day in Dec '84

The Commodores album was certainly wack. You guys will probably think I'm nuts but Heartbreak, imo, is a masterpiece! It is pop perfection. It's in my top 10 albums of all time.

yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like formulaic,synth-heavy music that sounds like it was composed by robots.

The original and the more successful lineup featuring Jody Watley, Howard Hewett, and Jeffrey Daniel. This reincarted version as led by Watley is an all out eh!

I too am a fan of the "classic" Shalamar lineup - Jeffrey Jody & Howard. . still blows my mind about the "beef" between Howard & Jody - how he apparently put her down a lot & whatever other negative stuff happened. had this version stayed togther longer, they probably would have had more success (even as the later versions had "dead giveaway" & maybe 1 or 2 more hits..) . from what I've read - mainly attributed to Jody - the "classic lineup" will never perform together again.. & that's too bad. I would probably pay a nice chunk of money to see J & J & H re-unite to do some shows. I'll see you tonight..

As much as I love the classic line-up,I am OK with them not ever doing a reunion.Jody still seems to be bitter about a lot of things and I wouldn't wanna see a reunion unless they can work it out, kiss and make up...which we all know is never gonna happen

It's sad that they split at exactly the moment when they began to crossover.MTV embraced their "Dead Giveaway"'video and they were finally having pop success.

. SoulAlive you're right - Jody does seem to be bitter, or at least very petty. Jody can sing, she definiltey has talent.. but in my opinion Howard was the better singer. . maybe Jody got a "big head"/more attitude after her string of hits in the mid-80s.. thanks to her "boyfriend" (at that time) our man Andre Cymone. wouldn't surprise me at all if Jody said (or implied) something to the effect of "yeah.. Howard dissed me didn't think I could sing & all that.. well I showed HIM" ("looking for a new love".. "real love".. she really liked puttin' "love" into all her song titles didn't she??) . oh well. . many of these "reunions" end up not being worth the hype or anticipation anyway.. you're also right that they were about to crossover with "dead giveaway" I'll see you tonight..

yeah, she's really bitter and for a reunion to work, everyone would have to put their differences aside and become friendly again.I just don't think that Jody is willing to do that.

Bananarama just did it....they can do it...seems like all is good with Howard & Jeffrey again, so Jody just needs to let it go and "Make That Move"!

They reunited on the Babyface/LL Cool J collaboration remake of the lover in you. They've done a few things together but an all out classic lineup reunion probably isn't happening. Jody's reasons for not reuniting are well documented--everybody has moved on.

According to the Unsung ep dedicated to Howard, Jody insisted on filming her scenes for the video separate from Howard and Jeffrey. I was a bit surprised and disappointed because for awhile I thought maybe they might have put asisde whatever differences they had for just once.

As much as I love Jody, she seems bitter as hell. She needs to let it go already. What could have been so bad from the past for all this drama, 30 years later?
