Just a brief thread about how much I love one genre of music. Besides Prince, Michael Jackson and the whole gamut of 80s artists. I can never get enough of DISCO music. I have started and added to numerous disco themed threads over the years, but I am just obsessed with this music and have been all my life. Yet it is so simple, but so catchy.

Now with a turntable, I have discovered a shop down the road selling old singles (45s) down the road and they are 41 each, I am coming with handfulls of these and in them, are many disco singles from the mid 70s to early 80s. Joyfully in New Zealand,disco was big business and given our location we got the best of both worlds - all the big American artists like Donna Summer, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross, Wild Cherry, EWF, Kooln the gang and many others and we got all the British and Eurodisco acts like Heatwave, Boney M, Tina Charles, Hot Chocolate, Abba and many others. I have about 20 disco records now (I have a hundred or disco disco songs on digital and CD, but original disco 45s are the way to go. Disco has been a part of my life since I was born and now I can continue it.

Plus with disco you had one off hits and cross over, there are very few disco songs I don't like, and even love Disco duck (ethel merman I draw the line at, but the song has a nice disco beat - What a difference a day makes). Disco was so popular here, with acts like Ottawan, Boney M, and Heatwave spending weeks at #1. With lots of funky people and Polynesians in New Zealand like me, dance music was everything and with disco, you could really cut loose. We even had our own disco acts like Mark Williams, Kim Hart and Jon Stevens (All Maoris like me). Yet lots of White New Zealanders like my Mum and sister knew how to get down and boogie too. To give you an idea how big disco was here, in 1977 Boogie Nights by Heatwave was the #1 song of the year, in 1978 it was Rivers of Babylon by Boney M, in 1979 it was Montego Bay by Jon Stevens and 1980 a song called The Locomotion by Ritz (Has anyone else heard of Ritz - I think they were French). Even in 1982 Ottawan spent 7 weeks at #1 with Hands up (English version of Haut les mains)

Disco was just music that makes you dance. In some ways Prince was kinda punk disco.

Thanks Pandurito, lots of classic Eurodisco there including some classic Later Boney M (Jambo 1983) and Malaika/Consuela Baz (1981). You obviously love Eurodisco too.

"Souvenirs" by Voyage (1978)-----love this song! Even though it's uptempo,it has a wistful/sad melody to it.

It's interesting that this song was a Number One smash hit in the summer of 1980.....months after everyone was saying that disco was "dead" It just proves my point that disco never really died.They just changed its' name to "dance music",lol.

Here's a tip: get the '54' movie soundtrack CDs (Volume 1 and 2).....lots of great disco songs on both CDs,including some rare ones

Used to be DJ and had lot of success with my disco-tunes Have still so much vinyl from that time...
The only thing i sometimes suffer with, if where disco ends and funk begins... Nevermind, both are equally good.

in the USA. I was 10 at the "peak" of disco in 1978..

& I know that had I been old enough, I would have definitely gone to places like that.

even though I was far from being legally able to enter any actual disco,

I danced to all of it on the radio & at home.

now as I am "older" I am discovering & re-discovering a lot of the great disco music from the mid- to late- 70s.

Disco was one of the music 'firsts' in my life, thanks to my mother, who listened to the Bee Gees, Boney M. etc.

I always respected this kind of music. The variety of artists, so many styles like R&B, soul, pop, jazz influenced disco. The music arrangements, instrumental tracks alone could be hits, not to mention the voices. Horns, saxophone, bass guitar sooo thick.

The Bee Gees are one of my favorite groups. Vocals, musicanship, hit-making sense, ability to stay in the game for so long, to change the course of their craft. Though the Bee Gees don't like to label them as 'disco band', they created the significant part of the disco sound. And like I've written before, the influences of other music genres is there and the Bee Gees grabbed the fists full of music from the other styles and enchanced disco, so in one way it can't be perceived just as a disco, but on the other hand it paved the way for the disco sound. 'Saturday Night Fever 'Soundtrack have been in my life since I have been 7 years old. 'Staying Alive' Mmmmmm. Mhmmmm. 'More Than A Woman'... 'How Deep Is Your Love' provides one of the best written songs ever for me, what a music consciousness pours from this song, the construction is so well thought. (Besides, Barry Gibb... drop dead gorgeous, so pretty, so damn pretty, mouth-watering pretty. The end. Or no: pretty. ).
