Ndeed!!
It was weird, I think he was too harmonically advanced for most folks in Rock, yet too much Rock for Jazz audiences, so he always put in that area, somewhere between progressive Rock and Jazz/RockFusion....but he was worshipped by guitar players and progressive guitar fans....

Well, he had a completely different legato approach to the guitar, it's certainly more fluid, with advanced chordal progressions. I remember an interview where Allan said he was influenced more by horn players like John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly rather than guitarists per se, so he adopted a style to make his runs sound more like those of a horn player-- in fact, he said he always wanted to play the saxophone, LOL --and rather than just using a pick, or just his thumb and index finger, he sometimes used all the fingers on his 'Strumming" hand to play notes....
I think he also mentioned that it while growing up, it was his unfamiliarity with the guitar that led to his unique approach to playing it...there was nobody to teach him a "correct" way to play, so he developed his own thing... there are people out there now who may sorta sound like him, but nobody played like that before he came along...
