Recommendations for great new artists/music?? One personal by-product of the loss of P, and Bowie as well, is my renewed passion and total dedication to my love of music and art, and refusal to take any of it, and the beauty it creates, "for granted" As such, I am starving for great, challenging newer music... stuff that is super -creative, demands many repeated listens, that isn't necessarily radio friendly, stuff to totally immerse in. Solo artist or group. I'm not really partial to any genre, though I love when they are blended, and also personally feel like there is a TON of creativity coming out of the R&B space. The most in my adult life (I am 37). I am aware of the new Kendrick album, Solange's album, and some of the more obvious stuff. Any more indie/underground stuff you guys are digging? Thanks in advance!

The frontwoman for The Internet, Syd (a/k/a Syd The Kyd) dropped a solo effort called Fin which is enjoyable. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

These are artists who refuse to pick a lane and do only one genre, their LPs are different journeys full with genre-shifting and unconventional songwriting... more or less.St. Vincent. She's pretty art rock (punk, jazz, baroque ifluences here and there). Really reminiscient of early-David Bowie...Miguel... many are familiar with him. I really dig his latest LP Wildheart... It's rock, psychedelic, R&B, synth-heavy... This song is fire:Frank Ocean, VERY unique songwriter, you hear nice melodies in his work.. He pitches everything, samples strange pieces of music... a lot of soul, minimal production at times, sometimes it's epic. Take a listen to Self-Control from Blonde:Grimes, to me she's the ultimate synthpop artist of this decade. Needless to say she does everything herself from production to engineering to artwork sleeve... Her latest, Art Angels, is very electropop, but the previous Visions is witchcraft music for good. This song (from Visions) is a good example:As far as soul and R&B music, there are musicians who are pushing the envelope and experimenting in conceptualized manners (without being all over the place), like FKA Twigs, The Internet (As mentioned by namepeace), Janelle Monae (just listen to Mushrooms & Roses...), D Angelo also did some very weird compositions in Black Messiah. Critics will say Solange and Beyoncé but I don't agree cause that sort of music is too bombastic to hold any true meaning. The genre in which everyday people experiment in it is basically electronic music, some do it with jazz like BADBADNOTGOOD, some with funk like Todd Terje, some with hip hop like Flying Lotus and Jamie xx (from The xx), even folk music is being fucked with (Check out Bon Iver's latest LP 22, A Million). This decade left plenty of room for experimentation and I guess it payed off, some GREAT, GREAT music out there.

Blood Orange, especially his last album Freetown Sound. Lots of retro 80s synths mixed with soulfull arrangements and a lovely falseto and deeper voice. Politically charged album a la Black Messiah and To Pimp A Butterfly. Check out the single 'Augustine'.
Perfume Genius, album No Shape. Hard to describe, very eclectic and filled with personal lyrcis.

Thanks to everyone for the time spent responding!! Really appreciate that. I had the pleasure of seeing Blood Orange open for Julian Casablancas during his solo tour a couple years back (I had no clue who he was but was floored)... His performance was stark and stunning and had glimmers of early Prince. I Did not get around to checking out his albums but now must. What I've heard of Miguel I've loved. Ditto St. Vincent. Will definitely check out all the rest of the artists.
