This stuff was cute at first, but now it's just getting pathetic.

I'm so not sitting through 28-minutes of someone else's summation of Janet Jackson. I think the 3 or 72 open threads about Janet right now speak more than this video probably does.

The best thing I think Janet ever did, through all she's said and done, was go independent. It took her too long, I think. But everything happens at the right time, I suppose. I think she should have done it after 20 Y.O., and it being her last record for Virgin. Island purposely dropped the ball with Discipline, almost trying to pick a fight with her. There aren't enough women taking those independent steps that we hear about. Yeah, Ani's been doing it for a minute. I'm surprised Alanis didn't try to go independent after a while, but Madonna's Maverick label was around until 2008 or so, and Alanis was cranking out records on it the whole time. (It's since been absorbed by Warner Music Group.) I think it even took Madonna too long to get away from WB. She left around the same time Maverick folded, but she went to Live Nation. Sorta okay, but they're even worse in my opinion.

I'm glad Janet didn't take that route. The other thing Janet did for the industry was, unfortunately, show just how sexist and bigoted it is toward women, opposed to men (read: Super Bowl). Even as much oddball shit as her brother did, she still suffered more backlash for that one incident (by being blacklisted) than MJ ever did with the tabloids. You can ignore the tabloids, but you can't ignore doors being shut in your face when you're trying to make music. I wish it hadn't have been her to do that, but the curtain was pulled back - the velvet rope let down, if you will.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I didn't watch the video but I think she's had a huge influence although she doesn't get credit for it.

I don't get the Janet Jackson adulation on here.

What did she contribute exactly? She's just some crappy singer. She's on a par with Chanice or Sonia (for those in the UK)

You know you're hiding out on a Friday night, listening to The Velvet Rope. You're protesting too much. To dismiss someone as big as Janet Jackson, and compare her with some c-list singer like Chanice or Sonia (whoever the latter is, I don't know) is ridiculous.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You troll hard (she's not on par with Shanice or Sonia), but your point is well taken.

The proliferation of Janet Jackson threads here is fucking weird. But people like what they
like!

It is my contention that Rhythm Nation is the best pop album anybody surnamed "Jackson" ever
produced.

Well, I should say, Rhythm Nation is my favorite pop album anybody surnamed "Jackson" ever pro-
duced as it features, what I think, is Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' best work.

she's just more proof that you don't need musical talent to be a "legend" in the music biz. Great dancer, great image for pop but really, come on. People like her are really an insult to the many, many women who actually can sing, can write, can play an instrument.

great album, a little derivative of other things but no, Michael's got a few that are better.

It can't be any different from Madonna, who is endlessly praised by the media; it's not like she composed the vast, vast majority of the music in her catalogue. Not composing one's own music shouldn't be viewed any different than not being the primary choreographer for a dance routine for your own song. And the simple fact is that Janet has influenced as many or more artists than Madonna.

ya, madonna is of the same ilk. Both had the luck and saavy to hire good people though and so yes, they did do some great albums. I think Madonna's like a prayer is a damn good album and Janet has a couple that are really really good.

control and rhythm nation are great albums so derivative isn't necessarily bad. Control was pure Minneapolis sound only with much clearer drum tracks, Nation ripped off a lot of sly stone. Great albums but I don't think they are as influential as a 1999 or a thriller.

Adorecream

I think she deserves recognition, the number of hits she has had. I am not a hard core fan of her, but I like her enough to have Best and Rhythm Nation, her music has always been nice and many lesser individuals have gotten into the Hall of the Fame before her. Her place in history is demanded.

.

I mean she had a baby at 50, that is pretty damn incredible.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
