It's one thing to like the show, but I don't think that an entire Soprano infomercial is appropriate or revelant to this thread for the reasons already stated. No one is changing anyone's POV simply because you cite a bunch of stats about the show.

The elephant in the room that you are willfully ignoring is that if the show's producers, thought that Journey sucked as much as you say, they wouldn't have chosen Don't Stop as one of the songs featured on their show in the first place.

It's not like they didn't have plenty of other choices.

I don't intend to change anyone's position.. I was giving my personal opinions on Journey, just like you and everyone else can give theirs. Remember the question in the OP... As for "The Sopranos ", many folks here say "Well, it can't be important culturally because I never watched it "... Again, each individual can have their own opinion on that show, or any show, as well . ( And would you say that James Brown or The Beatles are not culturally relevant or important because a specific individual never heard them or didn't like them ?) I was simply pointing out how I believe that a mediocre 30 year old song by a mediocre band is NOW so well known and popular. Also, creator David Chase points out that part of the reason he chose that song is because the CHARACTERS in the show would have liked it. That doesn't mean I have to...

Not exactly, you concluded that since you don't like them, they must suck, which is different than merely saying you don't care for them. That would have been fine but you tried to justify your dislike with a statement that was unnecessarily exaggerated when there was no need to justify what you don't like in the first place.

Furthermore it has already been shown that Journey songs have been used by a wide variety of people whether you like it or not. lol

Meaning many other popular shows, sports teams, other artists, etc. like Journey songs despite your personal disdain. lol

https://en.wikipedia.org/...ney_(band)

"Over the years, Journey songs have been heard or referred to in numerous films, television series, video games, and even on Broadway. The band's songs have been covered by multiple artists and adopted by sports teams. In particular, "Don't Stop Believin'" was heard in the final episode of The Sopranos, adapted by the television series Glee, sung by the Family Guy cast, adopted as the unofficial anthem of the 2005 and 2010 World Series champion baseball teams, performed by The Chipmunks in their album Undeniable (2008), and sung by the cast of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages."

You do realize that every usage referenced (except the 2005 World Series) was post "Sopranos " ?

Doesn't matter. The point is if they were so terrible then there would not be such a long list of people using Journey songs.

The Sopranos would have been the only one.

Again, your own personal preference does not translate to "they suck".

For example, I am not a Bouncy fan but it would be silly for me to claim that she has no talent just because I'm not into her.

And no one ever said the Sopranos wasn't a good show so please stop acting as if we did because that is deflecting. The thread is about Journey and the overkill is uncalled for.

Again, what is the title of this thread? I gave MY opinion of Journey, which is that I personally believe they are not Hall of Fame quality. How popular they are, how many records they sold, has no bearing on my view of them. I never said anyone has to agree with me, or that all copies of their music should be destroyed so no one else can ever hear them again . If you, or anyone else , like them, or think they are great, so be it ...

I could do without "Living On A Prayer" as well.

I think it was a bar sing-along that did it for me.

I like We Built this City, but didn't like the remix. I did get tired of hearing it at the time, but I can listen to it now. But I haven't heard Meatloaf all that heavily other than I Would Do Anything For Love. I like the song Weird Al did in Meatloaf's style.

Well the two of you are making a lot more sense than JJ and a more valid point, because honey, there's a whole heap of power ballads that have that reputation, not just Don't Stop Believeing. lol We could make a whole thread about overused power ballads.

Wind Beneath My Wings

I Wanna Know What Love Is

All By Myself

We Are The Champions

In The Air Tonight
Up Where We Belong

Etc, etc.....

"In The Air Tonight" I never get tired of.

I blame Miami Vice.

It's the perfect nighttime cruising song.

If I had to pick a Phil Collins power ballad maybe "Against All Odds", but he crushes it so hard I can't in good conscience pick that one either.

Wasn't "We Built this City " recently voted in a poll as the Worst Record Ever ? But if YOU like it, enjoy!

As for Meat Loaf, I was a teenager in NYC when his first album came out in 1977, and the Rock stations here played the hell out of it... so much so that it's hard for me to listen to it now. It sounds like Springsteen pumped up on steroids!!

Let's jack freaky's thread with the Meat-man. He won't even notice because he drinks. lol

Seriously though, the only song I knew of Meatloaf was Anything For Love, which is another one of those widely used ballads.

I think it's fun to sing along to songs that everybody knows.

It's a fucking crime against humanity that Jouney is not in the RRHOF. They've been around since the early 1970s. That's over 40 years. Get real - Steve Perry, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon - this is FIRST BALLOT material if ever there were any. If we need to boot some motherfuckers OUT of the Hall to make room for Journey - I say so be it and let's start with Laura Nyro.

They were inducted this year. The OP started this thread because they don't like the group and don't think they should be in. Also Steve Perry wasn't on the bands first 3 albums. Some of the early stuff was instrumentals.

Why Laura Nyro ? She was a brilliant songwriter, and a good, if idiosyncratic, singer. I love the album she did with Labelle in the early 70s called "It's Gonna Take a Miracle", where she covers R&B classics .

Steve Smith Says Steve Perry ‘Passed Torch’ to Arnel Pineda at Journey’s Hall of Fame Induction
By Martin Kielty May 4, 2017 Ultimate Classic Rock
.
Journey drummer Steve Smith said former singer Steve Perry was “passing the torch” to the band’s current vocalist Arnel Pineda with his appearance, but refusal to sing, at the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month. And he added that there’s “not much of a story” behind Perry’s decision.

It was the first time in 12 years that Perry had joined his former colleagues for an event, having attended another awards ceremony with them in 2005. Since then he seemed to have become something of a recluse, although he made a handful of surprise appearances more recently, and he’s also mentioned a solo album, planned for release this year.

Asked about the level of interaction with Perry during the induction night, Smith told Las Vegas Weekly, “Whatever you saw onstage was it! I think some of the guys saw him backstage for a little bit, but I just saw him onstage. It was great to see him. He was very gracious. I thought he gave a beautiful speech, thanking the band, the management and the fans. And also he acknowledged Arnel, which was really a beautiful moment. It really makes it clear that he’s passing the torch to Arnel. He’s the lead singer in Journey and he’s doing an amazing job. He’s a tremendous singer and a really compelling frontman.”

On the subject of speculation that Perry had considered singing at the induction, Smith said: “There’s really not much of a story there. We asked him if he wanted to sing, and he declined – he said no, but that he would be there.”

The drummer accepted it had been “a bit nerve-racking” to make a speech, but that he felt relaxed once he sat behind his kit. But he added that he hadn’t been obsessing over entry into the Hall of Fame, despite Journey having become eligible in 2000.

“The takeaway is that it’s been very important to fans,” he said. “The most important thing is the fans. It’s their dedication to us that has kept the band alive and relevant after all these years.”

Journey have just commenced a three-week residency at the Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas – and Smith thinks it might be an opportunity to work on a new record. “We’ve been discussing that. We might do some writing while we’re in Vegas, because we’ll be there for an extended stay. That could happen.”

When he rejoined the band in 2015, the drummer predicted that he’d remain on board for only two years. “Things are going along pretty well, so it could work out that I extend my stay,” he said. “We haven’t discussed it in any concrete way, but things are going really well. It may work out that I stick around for another year.”

I don't see why not?! The group was one of the hottest bands of their genre and era. Their music has stayed relevant over the years through it being featured in both movies and TV commercials. Not to mention, their music has successfully found its way into being reintroduced to new generations.
