C'mon man. "Don't Stop Believing" was a HUGE hit way before anyone ever heard of the Sopranos. It's been a karaoke staple for years and years. It was the theme song for many sports teams well before the Sopranos used it.

They may have been popular, they may have sold a lot of records, and a lot of concert tickets- but they sucked then and they suck now ! Just my opinion... And I don't believe they belong in a Hall of Fame if that is supposedly based on the quality of an artist's work #SOCIETYDEFINESU

In the 1980s, The Cosby Show was huge, and was more popular than The Sopranos. Cosby Show often had jazz music played on it, but it didn't make any of the songs a hit. There's also 2 well known episodes about the birthdays of Cliff's parents that feature The Night Time Is The Right Time by Ray Charles and I Got The Feeling by James Brown. Neither of those songs became a hit in Billboard after the episodes aired, nor did they suddenly start getting a lot of radio airplay. It probably didn't help the careers of James & Ray that much either. Rocky 5 helped James Brown's career because he was actually in it, and the song he was doing was new, not an oldie. I would think The Cosby Show had more influence than The Sopranos because the audience was bigger and it was the #1 show in the ratings for a few years. If a show with a large audience didn't suddenly help those songs get played a lot, why would a show on cable with a smaller audience give a big help to Journey like they were forgotten & obscure before the episode you are talking about. I still think Grand Theft Auto has more influence than a cable show about mobsters, because there's a wide range of ages playing that. I don't know anything about The Sopranos, but it doesn't seem like something most younger viewers would want to watch like they'd watch Hannah Montana or That's So Raven which probably had bigger audiences than The Sopranos. Hannah Montana had a concert movie released to theaters that made a lot of money. Kids do play video games though. So I'd guess more people has heard Journey in GTA than in The Sopranos. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

See examples in post #95...The band themselves say it's usage in "The Sopranos" turned things around
And somehow I don't think this bunch would be singing this song if it was not made culturally relevant again

I don't have a dog in this fight but I do know their greatest hits was a mega seller before The Sopranos so the nostalgia factor was their even before. I do like them but even I know their limits.

It used to be industry professionals and critics who voted. Now the public has a vote as well .
I was just giving my response to the OP : "Does Journey deserve to be in the Rock Hall"...my opinion is "NO"...others may disagree. That's what makes America great #SOCIETYDEFINESU

According to a "Glee" wiki page, it was sung twice on the show, in 2009 and 2015. Meaning it was post "Sopranos" #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Not only a "good deal", but a great deal of prestige. It may have not been on your radar, but "The Sopranos" won numerous Emmys and Peabody awards, received rave reviews, had some of the highest ratings of any show on cable (eclipsing many network shows during those years), and was voted the greatest TV show ever in a recent Rolling Stone magazine poll . So to have their song chosen to close out the show is probably equivilent to Scorsese or Spielberg putting it in one of their films #SOCIETYDEFINESU

I wonder if ole Steve is gonna ever release another solo album... I guess so! Steve Perry Says He’ll Release a ‘Cathartic’ New Solo Album in 2017Mike Coppola, Getty Images
Former Journey singer Steve Perry says he’s been recording his new, long-awaited solo album for about a year, and plans to release the “emotional” and “cathartic” record “later this year.” In a brand-new interview with ABC Radio, Perry describes the new album as an “emotional expression” about the loss of a loved one. “I met someone and I fell in love with this person,” he explains. “And I lost this person to breast cancer four years ago. In the midst of that, I had written some songs, and before I met her I had sketched some. And so about a year ago, I started recording.” Perry, who’s last full-length solo album was 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine, explains that “it’s been a real cathartic experience going back to that emotional place that I thought I would never go back to. And we really have been doing our very best to capture what I think are some timeless songs.” The singer, who last toured with Journey in support of 1986’s Raised on Radio, briefly returned to the group to record and release 1996’s Trial by Fire, but apart from a handful of appearances with the Eels or at baseball games, has been largely absent from the public eye in recent decades. He rejoined his former bandmates on stage this weekend to accept their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, delivering a rousing and somewhat David Lee Roth-esque acceptance speech. However, he did not perform with Journey, ceding that honor to the ...nel Pineda. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017’s Best Photos

I don't intend to change anyone's position.. I was giving my personal opinions on Journey, just like you and everyone else can give theirs. Remember the question in the OP... As for "The Sopranos ", many folks here say "Well, it can't be important culturally because I never watched it "... Again, each individual can have their own opinion on that show, or any show, as well . ( And would you say that James Brown or The Beatles are not culturally relevant or important because a specific individual never heard them or didn't like them ?) I was simply pointing out how I believe that a mediocre 30 year old song by a mediocre band is NOW so well known and popular. Also, creator David Chase points out that part of the reason he chose that song is because the CHARACTERS in the show would have liked it. That doesn't mean I have to... #SOCIETYDEFINESU

You still never explained why Journey's other songs and the songs by the other acts are popular on Youtube or on the radio. Faithfully has more views than either of the Don't Stop Believing videos individually. You said you didn't like any of the songs on the list, yet Ice Ice Baby has over 166 million views and U Can't Touch This has over 300 million. The Milli Vanilli song had over 34 million. I like those songs and so do a lot of other people. Vanilla Ice was on Dancing With The Stars last year. You make it sound like Journey was obscure because you don't like them, when that wasn't the case. The Final Countdown was in a commercial around a year ago and Europe actually appeared in it. There's a TV show called Lip Sync Battle which is like a celebrity version of the 1980s show Puttin' On The Hits. Jimmy Fallon is behind that and he also does the battles on The Tonight Show. They have a lot of 1980s songs on the show and clips from them get a lot of views on Youtube too.

I never said that the songs on that list weren't hugely popular, and remain so. I said in my opinion most of them weren't very good. I don't correlate success with quality. (Milli Vanilli ? Really? )... But if you or anyone else like them , I'm not going to try to dissuade you #SOCIETYDEFINESU

No, it's from a 1990s show on VH-1 called VH1's Karaoke Cabaret. I saw this when it originally aired, but no one has the actual clip uploaded. You keep saying that Journey is only popular today because of the show, but at best it would only make that one song popular. It would not have that much effect on Journey's other hits nor the group itself, other than getting some royalties. It's like there's "one hit wonder" groups who have a large amount of views on Youtube for that hit, but not really for any of their other songs. You must not listen to classic rock radio. They've been playing Journey and the Eagles heavily for years now, especially Eagles. They play the same songs over and over just like on a modern station that plays new songs you'll hear Adele over and over. I remember a few years ago, it seemed like just about every other song had Lil' Wayne on it. I stopped listening to Classic Rock Radio ages ago for that very reason: the same songs by the same groups over and over again. Even artists I love- Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Beatles, Springsteen- have more to them than the 5 or 10 songs that radio chooses to play #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Well I used to worked in a place where a radio was on the whole day. You kind of didn't have much of a choice but to listen to whatever was on. It was usually on the local adult R&B station, the adult contemporary station, classic rock, or the Wave, which was a format that played smooth jazz and some light pop/R&B like Smokey Robinson, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, & Sade. If a younger person was in control of the radio, they put it on the rap/R&B station, which is where I heard Lil Wayne, plus Usher & Beyoncé 2 or 3 times an hour. Keyshia Cole was played a lot too. There was one guy who would bring CDs and the majority of the time he played Bob Seger and Beatles albums all day and sometimes the 1984 album by Van Halen and the 1st album by Van Hagar. He even had bootleg Bob Seger and stuff he recorded in the 1960s before finding fame. . The Wave station is gone, it's a country station now. There were 2 classic rock stations, only one now. The other became a rap station. At one point there were 4 rap stations. One was the R&B/hip hop station that plays what is currently on the charts, 2 were all rap, the other is rap oldies like from the 1980s & 1990s all the way back to Sugarhill Gang. The hip hop oldies is gone, it didn't last that long. I think it's Spanish pop music now.
