Bruno Mars 24K Magic...The Art of the Interpolation I really dont listen to radio for music anymore, ain't nothin to listen to 95 percent of the time and the other five percent, if that song sounds good, that song is an interpolation of a jam from not years ago, but decades ago. Interpolation is a different approach from sampling, but none the less, its still done so with a similar goal in mind.
Perfect example is 24K Magic where at the very least, features the interpolation of 4 classic r&b classics from the 1980s and fuses the sounds of all four to serve as the structure of its synthesizer arrangements and baseline 1. Starpoint's 1985 jam "Object of My Desire".....he definitely hit that one up big time 2. Midnight Starr's 198-1984 jam "Party on the Dance Floor"...the rhythm arrangement helped with springing up those adlibs 3. One Way's 1980 jam "Cutie Pie" to interpolate allot of the ambiance that was featured throughout that song 4. The System's 1983 jan "You're in my System" for allot of the bridging Then you here elements of Roger Troutman and Zapp Bruno Mars likes interpolating the music of not solo r&b artists of that time but allot of the underated r&b groups of that time since he has a large entourage around him. Thus the art of the interpolation [Edited 3/25/17 14:17pm]

First time I heard the song.... it reminded me of Kool and the Gang. But now that you mention OOMD- StarPoint, definitely... you are right.

I agree with everything you said, I think the point you made is exactly what the nay sayers should understand when it comes to Bruno Mars.
He's the perfect master of interpolating, and creating a song that sounds like a very specific era, but without actually ripping off the songs note by note.
Locked Out of Heaven's chords don't sound like any other Police chords in terms of shape or tempo, but they are similar in sound, so is 24K Magic and many of the songs you mentioned, he probably focues on the instruments he uses for the recording. He recently said than Warren G rented him a synthesizer, he also worked with Babyface, Greg Phillipganes played the solo on Versace. He worked with T Pain to create that 2004 R&B feel, basically every era of R&B, that's pretty impresive, I don't know how you can do that without coming off as derivative, but even Bruno he manages to create some differences.

You've left out The Message, still the first thing that occurs to me when I hear it.

very true......and that's the dilemna most of today's contemporary artists are facing......
and the thing is, when someone is showcasing his/her own unique way of expression....we'll be able to see it and feel it....it will be right there

A tough call, perhaps he's great at what he does, even if it's just... well nothing new. The only thing i know for sure is that i love his shit, basically because he seems to enjoy it thoroughly. Specially when it comes to live performance.

I'm listening to 24K Magic and I it. It's a really good album. Listening to Calling All My Lovelies right now, and his vocals on that song are sublime. I love his voice. He mixes R&B, pop, and dance music really well. He has great dance moves and he plays instruments. Loved his Super Bowl performance last year and Uptown Funk was one of my favourite songs of 2015. I have tickets to his Philly concert in October, and I'm really looking forward to it. [Edited 4/1/17 20:28pm] Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

I saw some clips and the whole stage visuals, the whole show is pretty damn luxurious, there's everything from choreography to guitar solos. He's really on the top of his game. I'm seeing him in Paris in a few weeks.

Calling All My Lovelies is my favorite track on the album. That song is FIRE! It's my new jam! Speaking of interpolation, CAML reminds me a little bit of another song, but I can't think of the other song. This is my favorite song on the album. I respect, admire and love Bruno Mars for trying to make quality fun pop music in a industry generation that makes trashy pop music and that is all I will say about this thread.

This album is likely to get nomination for Album of The Year next year at the Grammy Ceremony, but to me it's not fair that his first album got a nomination and his second album did not; it's unfair because Unorthodox is a much better album than the first, for that matter is his best album.

Everyone is well aware Bruno is the world greatest cover artist. They just all accept it and don't question it. Bruno is very middle of the road you'll see no one really hates him or likes him there's no strong held emotion attached to him he essentially has no real identity. Who is the Bruno mars behind the mask of other artist the world may never know.
