Elvis was many things, but he wasn't a racist. [This message was edited Thu Apr 3 3:56:24 PST 2003 by JohnnyTheFox]

Chuck D accused him in "Fight Power": "Elvis was a hero to most/But he never meant shit to me/Yes he's straight-out racist/The sucker was simple and plain/Motherfuck him and John Wayne!" Chuck withdrew his comments in 1996, admitted he hadn't known much about Elvis at the time and said he now acknowledged Elvis wasn't a racist at all. Now, John Wayne WAS a racist through and through.

this is all because of 'sp[eculation' that Elvis said something racist about black people.
oh also cos a couple of his early songs were done originally by black ppl but werent credited. with all the influence col parker had on elvis' career,i believe he could have played a part in this. if Elvis was racist he wouldnt associate with black people. ie; have the sweet inspirations in his band. yet its cool for Chuck D to say something so damming as he did in his song? i havent heard anything about that being untoward. Elvis rocks ***************************************************************************************

I think Chuck was speaking more symbolically then talking about Elvis or John Wayne personally. Those two are icons of white America and that's who I think Chuck was taking a shot at. A rumor was started by anti Elvis people that he made a racist comment about blacks way back in the 50's. And black folks believed it. it was never proven and anybody who ever knew him denies he was.
His Dad was racist though and some family members were, but his mom wasn't and that may have been the reason that he wasn't. Because he was very close to her and she was a big influence on him There is no proof he was, but plenty that he wasn't. - Most of his favorite singers were black. -Friends have said how upset he was when Martin Luther King jr was killed. - Some of his friends included B.B King, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr, Fats Domino, and Jackie Wilson. When Wilson had a stroke in the mid 70's, Elvis paid his hospital bills. - The black female singing group "The Sweet Inspirations" sang back up for him in concert. And one of the ladies dated and eventually married one of the "Memphis Mafia". -When he played The Houston Astrodome in 1970, word got to him that some of the redneck people in charge of the event didn't want the Inspirations apart of his show because they were black. Elvis threatened to not perform if they were not included. Elvis had some black maids but they were treated amazingingly. He bought one a house and another a car. And they were paid really good. Good to see Chuck D admitting he was wrong.

Chuck and PE still sing the same exact line when they perform "Fight The Power" at their gigs. Chuck never withdrew his comments, he clarified them. Which is why he still raps the song AS IS almost 15 years after it was recorded. For those who want to know exactly what he said when he clarified those lyrics you'll have to research it. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

True, but I don't think it would have anything to do with MJ's color - or lack of it.

What I grew up hearing was that Elvis once said: "All that Black people can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes!" Maybe it's an urban legend? I don't know.
If you ask me, I've always thought that as dark as Elvis tanned there HAD to be a black relative somewhere in his family tree.

Elvis isn't racist. The music industry at the time was and many see him as stealing other artists thunder, for many those other artists were superior. It's just a case of very misguided sour grapes. Very understandable though, considering.

It's all relative. Both sides could use quotes to say he is or isn't but one things for sure, growing up where he did in the time he did, it was likely he and his peers grew up with a fair amount of instilled prejudice...

There are no quotes at all that support him being racist. There aren't two sides to that story. Just one.

According to this sapm mail I got yesterday, Lisa Marie is KKK:
"Did you HEAR that on the Diane Sawyer interview? When asked what her reaction would be if she found out the molestation rumors about Michael Jackson were true? SHE CHOSE TO SAY, "I would have him hanging on a tree." (And for the CLUELESS - there are OTHER methods of punishment. What the fuck did she go "there" for?) This racist BITCH would do what racist WHITE BITCHES have had done to black males all through out history. Lisa Marie Presley = RACIST KKK BITCH"

Elvis is a piece of racist trash plan and simple. Most people are afraid to state this because he's dead and many consider him an icon. Someone said the phrase that pays, "All a nigger can do is shine my shoes and buy my records". Someone else said he took good care of his "Black servants", I guess that shine the shoes part was on the money. And when did he credit his whole career to the black man? This thread is up simply because in our heart of heart of hearts it's hard to think that an artist we love is not perfect. What a minute, he was from Memphis, had black servants, and stole a race of people's music and called it his own. That sounds good enough for me to hate his racist ass. I almost urinated on his wax statue at Madam Turssut's in NYC Times Square, but some stupid staff worker stopped me. He understood, but he still stopped me. Damn bleeding hearts. (I'm gonna try again real soon) Death to ELV...oh, nevermind.
