CURTIS MAYFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a big Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions fan!!. I've been listening to him like crazy the pass couple of days. I just don't understand why he doesn't get the proper tributes and recognition of his colleagues like: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder..He was a bad brother..I brought the DVD The Message and Music of Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions a couple of years ago, but I still feel he deserves better than what he's getting.. He is one the few to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice
I wish there was s two-hour episode of UNSUNG covering him and The Impressions, it would be worth it. I would love for BET, CENTRIC, or other TV channels to do some type of acknowledgement of him. He will forever be A WINNER!!!

Curtis Mayfield's brilliance does not get the recognition it deserves. He was extremely talented, soulful and versatile.

Baddest soundtrack in the history of music. the arrangement on this song is sick, and the lyrics capture the essence of the film brilliantly. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

This song is sublime and unforgettable. Not only is it one of the most sensual songs ever, but I cant hear it without thinking about the very first time I ever saw a love scene. I was SHOOK because I was just a seventh grader and I had no clue what men and women really did behind closed doors. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Mayfield didn't dance (along with the Impressions), didn't sing about sex, wasn't blind or eccentric. That's why he isn't mentioned with JB, Stevie, Marvin or Sly. But he's just as important as those brothers. And he is one of the more underrated songwriter. His lyrics were HARD and DEEP. Just listen to songs "Minstreal and Queen", "This Is My Country" "Moonlight Shadows" and that's just his Impressions tracks. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Curtis deserves tons of praise because he was musically just as great as Stevie, Marvin and co. He is very underrated yet he made the classics "Curtis" and "Superfly" LPs. Not only that he made "Roots", "There's No Place like America Today" and "Back to the World". He also worked with Aretha, Gladys and the Pips and his Curtom label had some talented acts on it too. What is remarkable about Curtis is his final album he recorded whilst being paralysed from the neck down. That must have took a lot of effort but "New world order" was a great return to form.

He's been overshadowed by his contemporaries, and a certain superstar that followed . . . but he doesn't need to take a backseat to anyone.

Curtis Mayfield's music should be part of the American Songbook. His songs catptured the zeitgeist of the '60s and '70s for the Black Experience, inner city life and Black pride. In fact, I bought The Impressions DVD about their amazing career and I plan on buying the complete box set. To me, Curtis Mayfield was a BRILLIANT BUSINESSMAN-he started touring at 15 years old, created his own record company with Eddie Thomas called Curtom Records, learned how to copyright his own music, owned his master recordings and publishing. Self financed his recordings, so he could sing and write the music that he wanted without having to compromise. In my life, his music is so inspirational. His live performances from Ronnie Scott and Montreux 1987 are incredibly spiritual and thought provoking. As far as why Curtis Mayfield doesn't get as many tributes as Marvin Gaye and his contemporaries. In my opinion, it's a mix of radio not playing his songs on r&b radio anymore and he wasn't as popular as his peers. But among musicians he is a GIANT. Any serious musician, has reverence for Curtis Mayfield: Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Rapheal Saadiq, Dangelo, Bonnie Raitt, Bilal, Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne, Robert Cray, Steve Winwood have either paid musical tribute to Curtis Mayfield or verbalized how important Curtis Mayfield is to music. I heard Eric Leeds say that only a few musicians truly expanded the vocabulary of music which was Ray Charles and James Brown. Curtis Mayfield is among those greats. Lyrically, like Carlos Santana said, his lyrics should be taught in schools. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Lyrically, like Carlos Santana said, his lyrics should be taught in schools. In his time Curtis was as successful if not more than his R&B contemporaries. He was constantly on the charts from 1958 until the early 80s. I nean8the only groups bigger than the Impressions in the 60s were the Tempts, Toos and Miracles. And solo in the 70s right there with JB, Stevie, Gaye, Al Green, Ike Hayes. Now as the years went on really only JB, Stevie and Marvin have kept their names goin strong. But there are many artist who were huge back in the day that are totally forgotten. A guy like Jackie Wilson huge. Joe Tex, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. The girl groups like Shirrels were huge. He was a great songwriter and guitarist. Choice of Color has already been mentioned, but Gipsy Woman, People Get Ready and especially The Makings of You also make my heart melt. My favourite is the Curtis Live album with its stripped down funky sound. And a lot of wisdom in the lyrics. Can't praise him enough. Such a shame his life ended in such a tragic way. Yes this is nice. I had never heard this one before. I not too long posted Love That I Lost from the Impressions and If There Is A Hell Below(We're All Going To Go) that musically seemed to inspire the Isleys Who's That Lady. My wife loves The Makings Of You. She hipped me to that one. I liked the title song from his last album New World Order and I'm embarrassed to say I haven't listened to the rest of it or have it in my collection. Curtis Mayfield is definitely one of the best to ever do it. Don't laugh at my funk

He's also very undderatted for haw he used his guitar in songs. One of the first to really popularize chicken scratching very early on. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

I think there was a lot of interest in his music in the late-90s and early-00s. It wasn't just that he was considered one of the greats of soul music, Many rockers were into his stuff too and cited him as an influence. His records have always included on "the best soul albums of all time" type of lists in magazines.

Hendrix is far more iconic though. It doesn't really hurt his legacy for interest to dicipate, as it has with Curtis. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

To the funky, funky, funky groove Get down, baby Let the light reflect upon your natural mood Your creative mood shall express itself Get down, baby After life and desire there is nothing left A hungry man in search for a hungry girl It's strange, so plain we're all cannibal The most wasted and two faced of all animals
Get down, get down Get down, get down Take my soul, baby When you reel I can feel so much desire Take my soul, baby Life unfolds from my soul when you start a fire
So get down, just get down As the rhythm should follow through your able soul Get down, baby Play the part like a pro in a perfect role To the funky, funky, funky groove Get down, baby Let the light reflect upon your natural mood Of the mysterious need in a female's heart Man can only follow not knowing how His faith might erupt [Incomprehensible] get down Get down, get downGet down To the funky, funky, funky groove Get down, baby Let the light reflect upon your natural move Your creative mood shall express itself Take my soul, baby After life and desire there is nothing left get down Get down, get down Get down, get down Get down, get down Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
