Caitlyn Smith ~ Before You Called Me Baby

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Johnny Gill & Jaheim ~ 5,000 Miles / Jorja Smith ~ Beautiful Little Fools

Didn't have time to listen to all but these stood out. 5000 Miles is the best thing I've heard

from Johnny in years and this Jorja Smith chick has that Corinne Bailey Rae feel.

Real Estate, Ryley Walker, Two Door Cinema Club, White Denim, DD Dumbo, Bon Iver, The XX, Sleaford Mods, Christine and the Queens, Iggy Pop, Elbow, Michael Kiwanuka, Nick Cave, Laura Marling, Julie Byrne, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Wilco, Father John Misty, London Grammar... the list goes on.

I find no trouble finding really good music. Just stick 6music on for a few days and you'll find your ears and mind being educated smile

Find a public-funded radio station online (Pacifica Radio network) and you'll be continually educated to good music both old and new and be exposed to interesting background information. Those deejays really care about their stuff.

Laura Mvula's latest album The Dreaming Room has been out through last November so is not brand-spanking new, but I am really enjoying that one right now. It's a pop/soul/inspirational extravaganza that comes at you in interesting directions.

Here's some stuff I'm enjoying recently...

Rich Brown, "Lua" (2008) This track isn't new, but it's perhaps my favourite from this Toronto bassist. If you're truly looking for new, Rich's latest album is with a jazz-funk-rock fusion band called The Abeng, self-titled, from 2016. Good stuff in the vein of Weather Report.

Liv, "Wings of Love" (2016) - Debut single from this supergroup fronted by Swedish singer Lykke Li.

Nouvelle Vague, "No One is Receiving," from the album I Could Be Happy (2016) -- Cool French band that does covers of '70s and '80s new wave classics, mostly in a bossa nova style.

Bad Willow, "Ringer" (2016) Another Toronto band that I dig. Not sure if their stuff is available for purchase yet, but you can find some of it streaming online.

Not "new", but I've been listening to JD McPherson lately.

He's like a mashup of Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, but with a new sound similar to The Black Keys.

It's a nice change from all the "beats" and same-sounding stuff that's popular now.
