Following the break-up of The Time, Johnson began producing and playing for several other artists. The Alexander O’Neal hit “Innocent” features a gritty guitar solo from Johnson. Later, when Janet Jackson needed a rocked-out track for her “Rhythm Nation 1814” album she called on Johnson. The result was the chart topping, “Black Cat.”

“When the song was sent to me the riff to “Black Cat” was originally on piano,” Johnson said laughing. “First thing I did was change it to a guitar riff. The other key (to the song’s success) was getting her to sing it like a rock goddess. I didn’t know if she could pull it off, but she’s a Jackson and she killed it.” -Jellybean Johnson(the Time, the Family)

All the lonely nights I spend alone
Never around to love me
You're always gone
Cause you're hangin out
Breakin' the rules
Oh the man has come
Looking for you
You're a rebel now
Don't give a damn
Always carrying on
With the gang
I'm trying to tell you boy
It's a mistake
You won't realize
Til it's too late

Don't understand
Why you insist
On ways of living such a dangerous life
Time after time you stay away
And I just know that you're telling me lies

Black cat
Nine lives
Short days
Long nights
Livin on the edge
Not afraid to die
Heart beat
Real strong
But not
For long
Better watch your step
Or you're gonna die

You're so together boy
But just at a glance
You'll do anything
If given a chance
Scheming, plannin lies
To get what you need
So full of promises
That you never keep

Don't you tell yourself
That it's okay
Sick and tired of
All of your games
And you want me to stay
Better change
Makes no sense to me
Your crazy ways

Black cat
Nine lives
Short days
Long nights
Livin on the edge
Not afraid to die
Heart beat
Real strong
But not
For long
Better watch your step
Or you're gonna die

Produced ByJanet Jackson, Jellybean Johnson

I have my original copy of RN 1814 on vinyl from 1989. I remember it very well.

Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina and parts of NC not long after the release of this album.

We were without power for like 3 days. I haven't listened to the vinyl in years. I'm almost

embarassed to say. I mainly have listened to the Greatest Hits cd instead or Velvet Rope

and All For You to satisfy my Janet fix. I have to listen and convert the vinyl to cd.

I have the 12 inches for Black Cat and Love Will Never Do Without You.

Does the RN1814 vinyl really not have the interludes?

Start with the self-titled debut and work your way forward.

Thanks for confirming this. I was wondering because the LP jacket only lists "Pledge" at the beginning of side 1 and "Livin'...In Complete Darkness" at the end of side 2. For years I've been putting off getting it on vinyl because I could not fathom the album without all the interludes.

That's ridiculous.

Essentially you're arguing that we should only stick to one topic during a conversation without
there being any topical contours; but that's not how conversations take place, for the most part. If
you don't see the link between Thriller and 1814, ask us to explain it; but don't just necessarily de-
pict the insertion of Thriller into this conversation as trolling.

Provocative? Yes. Trolling? No.

Its my opinion which I am also entitled too.

Yall always do this in Janet threads just to find a reason to slight MJ and yes it is trolling. Thriller and RN are not similiar and sound totally different so the comparision is baseless.

Who's "y'all"? I don't "always do" anything in Janet Jackson threads! I was honestly not trying
to troll by making my comment; I only wanted to have a comparative discussion.

Thriller and RN are indeed similar: pop albums written and presented in a mostly R&B context
by siblings during the 1980s that have gone on to be considered historical entries in the annals
of recorded popular music. So, a comparison between the two is absolutely not baseless.

And Carousal, please stop with the "it's my opinion and I am also entitled too" argument. People
have the right to have an opinion - no duh. For example: I am entitled to opine that 2+2 is 5 or,
that planet Earth is a flat surface. But those are dumb ass opinions and ought to be called out,
for obvious reasons. So, just because you have an opinion doesn't mean it has to be taken
seriously. By the way, yours is one of the few opinions I do take seriously here, so don't get it
twisted.

nah, you reading it wrong...i love MJ, i mean no disrespect at all to him...i just prefer those JimmyJamTerryLewis produced tracks over almost any other music available...unless we talking about the Teddy Riley produced Dangerous tracks... ive loved michaels, and later janets music, since Diana Ross graced the back of The J5s first LP cover...believe that

Right.

We can choose RN over Thriller, and even criticize Thriller without taking away from the realization
that Michael Jackson was probably the most influential and talented pop entertainer that has ever
existed; and it is not unusual that he would have the best selling pop album of all time as a result.
With all that being said, it is just peculiar to me that ultimately, Janet is the one out of her family who
ended up having the more interesting album during their respective hey-days!

And those Riley tracks on Dangerous are fucking amazing! But, I shoot jizz in my boxer briefs
whenever I hear MJ's vocal arrangements on tracks like "Keep It in The Closet" too with how he
syncopates his vocal hiccups and gulps with the drum track - dude was simply amazing!
