that was definitely urban myth! i thought for the longest time, well until i saw the video, that it was Prince. He even moans like Prince in it. Well, it did pay the rent that year for them! | |

I clearly remember when these boys came out...Hearing OH Sheila on the radio made me think it was P right away...I mean c'mon sounds like Prince singen about Sheila gotta be...NOT!!! bought the record and poof another wannabe...still got the 12" to this day...liked their other song "Digital Display" a lot!!! still do when I hear it on the radio...they also had a slow jam that was tight but of all times I can't remember the name right now...and ta think I was thinking about it last week...anybody remember? -------------------------------------------------

Vocally, they NEVER sounded like Prince. Musically, they sounded like they were straight out of Minneapolis, though. They simply used a sound that was popular at the time to launch their songs. Melvin Riley sang in his natural voice 90% of the time...at the time, Prince was still singing majorly in falsetto. Whereas it was obvious that they were "influenced" by the MN sound, when you listen, I mean REALLY LISTEN to their songs they DON'T sound like Prince songs. They bit the instrumentation stylings (LINN drums, synth patches, etc.), but not the writing style. | |

I do remember the song but the name "Let Me Love You Down"??? Is that the title??? it just came back to me... -------------------------------------------------

I know we have posted many times on this before so I'll give the short version. RFTW was out of Flint, Mich. They released their debute album on their own label before being picked up by MCA. Loved me some RFTW Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

I don't see how anyone can think Oh Shiela was Prince after the vocals kick in. I can see how people could've thought "Got to Get up on it" by Bobby Nunn (she's just a groupie fame) was Prince. The falsetto sounds just like prince, but when he uses his regular voice on the bridge you can tell it's not Prince. | |

When Sheila E. heard the song "Oh Sheila" for the first time,even SHE thought it was Prince singing about her.
I liked RFTW but let's face it,there was nothing unique about their music.They were heavily influenced by the Prince sound of 1982-84,the most obvious examples being... ***"Baby (Let Me Love You)"(1986)---The synth line on this song is the same as Prince's "Little Red Corvette"! ***"Mary Goes Round"(1986)---you could just hear Prince singing a sarcastic line like "you're like a doorknob and everybody's had their turn"...lol... ***"I'm The One Who Loves You"(1985)---those drum machines and that damn "squishy" sound (also heard on "Sex Shooter",not sure what instrument it is) makes this song sound like a '1999' outtake. | |

They were not trying to sound like anyone. Oh Shelia was about Ms.E. Melvin had a crush on her. The sounding the same is not done on purpose. Most of the singers you are comparing started playing in the church. I met Melvin at church. I was directing the choir of my church. He thought it was cool to see a woman directing a choir. The church had a pig in the front yard. Melvin said something about not wanting to spend his life never seeing outside of Flint Michigan. Check out the promo version of "Slide Over" I am on the couch with Melvin.Smile. sorry if that was over your head...jump up and try to catch the point next time. | |
